Hi.
Reading from previous threads, there is supposed to be no difference in performance using a 32k MTN Sim and a 3G sim.
I have a E220 Modem, which I have now tested my Prepaid 32K sim, vs 3G Sim I received with my contract.
With the 32K Sim, I only get up to 1.8Mbps (Speedtest.net), and with the 3G Sim, I am getting 2.5Mbps (Speedtest.net).
I am using exactly the same setup for both tests, only changing the sim cards on the modem.
My question is, is this just a coincedence, or will I get better speeds should I do a simswap on my prepaid sim from 32K to USIM?
Has anyone had an experience similar to this, and did the simswap actually result in increased data speeds?
Thank you for any assistance.

I agree with you MRI , I too have tried both sims 64k vs 32k and also get a speed difference . Other than the price difference between the 32k (0.99c) versus (R195) for a 3G sim nobody can tell me why there is a speed difference .

To use Skype with webcam, I had to get a 3G SIM.
Does not work properly with my 32k. Keeps breaking up.

Went down to MTN store at N1 City. The guy behind the counter reckons that I cannot get a 3G sim on prepaid i.e I cannot do a sim swap for prepaid from 32K to 128K, only to another 32k sim. Don't know if this is accurate or he is bullsh*ting me. In any case, Gonna try the Service centre. If that fails, I will just get me a dual sim with my contract an load a data bundle on there.

so basically since im on prepaid i also cant use a 128k? err... just as a matter of interest, are there other alternatives:

on vodacom, can you have a 3g prepaid sim?
is there also a speed difference between the two?

i'll be googling this definetily! i use skype a lot, and i also get breakups!

I went into a MTN store the other day and they said to me that I cant purchase a 3G sim but I can do a sim swop from my 32k sim to a 3g sim and then pay in R105 .

Best to ask in the Vodacom forum, but I recently got a new SIM from Vodacom Customer Care, was given a choice between a 32K SIM for free, or a 64K SIM for R63.

I don't think Vodacom have USIMs at all, even for contract users.

I never noticed any speed difference between a 32K SIM and a 128K USIM on MTN.

on mtn, 'tis impossible to get a 3g sim prepaid, have to be on contract! (met eish ja)... im also experiencing skype breakups!

I have two 3G USIMs from contracts I have recently cancelled. I don't know if MTN will allow you to "sim-swap" to them, but if you can find out, you can have them.
