Johannesburg - An initiative to provide convenient internet connectivity as well as access to a wealth of education information via a bespoke online portal to some of the country's poorest communities was launched on Wednesday by mobile services operator MTN.
The pilot project of the MTN@ccess enterprise was unveiled by MTN South Africa managing director, Maanda Manyatshe, at the Alexandra Resource Centre in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
The primary aim of the project is to provide empowering opportunities within communities for education, enterprise and business development through connectivity to data and business tools such as the internet, e-mail, payphones and fax services.
The MTN@ccess enterprise and portal project is currently being rolled- out to a further ten community sites within Atteridgeville, Alexandra, Vosloorus, Tembisa, Mamelodi and the Pretoria CBD.
"MTN's commitment to the programme is a firm one. Our company is making significant investments in the development of community enterprise development initiatives like this one," says Ashraff Paruk, head of strategy and product innovation at MTN South Africa.
