I just got a call from a "private number" - when I picked up it played me a recorded message saying something about how I qualified for a cellphone contract.

Ten seconds later, I got a call from some sales agent, also on "private number". Although I could barely understand her, I could make out that she was trying to sell me some kind of "premium"|"platinum" cellphone contract. Later on she said she was from MTN. I told her I wasn't interested and hung up.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Reason I'm wondering is until she said she was from MTN, I thought it was just your normal rubbish telemarketing - after all why call and play a message then have a person call 10 seconds later?

Also it's unlikely that I do qualify for any kind of contract as I spend only about R60 or less pm on airtime! So I don't think it was MTN... in retrospect I should have got more info but I didn't feel like contending with broken English over a crackly connection. Any ideas on this?

The cellphone operators are desperately trying to sign you up for a two-year contract before Mobile Number Portability (MNP) kicks off in November.

I get a SMS from Autopage every second day informing me about their awesome upgrade options. I'm waiting for MNP before changing to Virgin Mobile.

Hi Guys
I can confirm that they are selling MTN contracts but it's deff. not MTN doing the sales. This company is phoning Pre-paid MTN users to sell them MTN contracts.

Will try and find-out who this company is.

Yup, I got a lot of these private number calls recently but most of them I don't pick up, just like yours, a pre-recorded message and ask me to press any key to continue, hell no!

Got another one - this is pretty close to the exact wording of the recorded message: "You have been pre-approved for a cellular contract without a 2 year commitment. Please press any key to find out more". No follow-up call this time.

Does anyone know who this company is and how they decide who to call? I want to get off their list!

I guess it's virgin? cos my friend sign contract with them, I think 18 month, so not 2 year contract.....

Its not uncommon for people coming to the end of their exisiting mobile contract period to start getting telemarketing calls. They will try to package you a deal, and even say thy will send the phone straight away. The trick is to be firm and not to be tempted by any offer which sounds too good to be true.
