MTN Uncapped Lite problems in Melrose Arch

So fed-up with MTN at the moment!

I've been having problems with my Uncapped Lite connection since last year November and they've done nothing to resolve the problem. I logged a ticket, phoned them a couple of times and even went to the retail store in Melrose Arch yesterday. They haven't even bothered returning my messages or calls to give me a progress report.

And I'm not the only person having data connectivity issues in this area. A colleague is having the same problem whereby the connection drops constantly - making it impossible to do anything online.

It works fine at home (Cresta area) and early in the morning but from about 9AM, it starts degrading gradually until it dies.

I spent half an hour on the phone with MTN yesterday and I was nowhere closer to resolving the issue after the call and had to put up with obnoxious, useless call centre staff acting like they were doing me a favour. Went to the store in Melrose and spent 20 minutes waiting there, same story.

I have full signal, but it keeps on jumping between HSUPA, 3G and 3G+ and every time that happens, the connection disappears. I can't even get the Speedtest.net app to find the closest server!

Thank goodness I didn't move my cellphone over to them as well!

Shocking "service", MTN! :(

It's not the service dude, it's just simply how wireless is. It degrades over time. Also, the problem you describe isn't anything to do with their internet or bandwidth or anything, your connection keeps jumping between towers. That in itself causes a lot of latency/timeouts to happen. Having it locked to 1 tower (antenna perhaps) would solve your problem, but I had the same issue, saw multiple towers, jumped around so much it didn't give me a decent enough connection, and just opted for ADSL at the end.

Wireless is like that, especially when they make another tower live because of congestion in the area.

I used to have the same problems in my area, I agree with AcidRaZoR its not MTN's network. What worked for me was getting the Antenna installed at my place, this did wonders and the connection not dropping anymore and my speed have also increased just a bit. DSL is not an option where I am located because my estate decided against any telkom infrastructure. So I know the feeling of having to go with Wireless. My only issue now is to find out if MTN has a unrestricted APN because I need to setup VPN. But my connection is very stable See if the antenna works for you, I got one setup permanently. But I know you can get one you can move around it attaches to a window. Hope you get this sorted!
Goodluck

You guys make valid points, but that doesn't explain why it's fine when I arrive early in the morning and starts degrading as the day goes on. Could it be congestion on the towers? That I am being put on another tower 'cos the one I'm on now is full?

Regardless of what the problem is, it should be resolved by MTN. It was working fine before November last year and then just started degrading. And what frustrates me more than the lack of connection, is MTN's shocking customer service. I phoned them on Tuesday and I still haven't heard anything back from them.

I have ADSL at home. This is my mobile connection, so it can't be replaced by ADSL. I have the SIM in a wireless router that I connect my iPad and Smart Phone to at the office, so an antenna isn't really an option either unfortunately :(

They have an MTN rep that visits our offices every now and again and the last time they were here, I spoke to them and they mentioned that there is an issue on the one tower here. So it's definitely a problem that has to be resolved. What annoys me is that MTN doesn't seem to be doing anything about it.

All of this said and regardless of what the issue is, they need to fix it. It's none of my concern whether it jumps between towers or disconnects or whatever - it should work. I pay for a service and I should receive that service, like I have for the last couple of months.

Just very disappointed in MTN's customer service. I was so smitten with them not so long ago, because when the connection works, it's fantastic! Like right now, it's cruising along at 500k/s. I couldn't even do a speed test yesterday. :(
