Apologies if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find an answer in a search (both google and mybb).

What are the requirements for getting a new contract from MTN (and Vodacom and CellC)? My current MTN contract, which is ending in a few months, is currently in my mother's name. Since I can afford to pay for my own phone now, I'd like to open up a contract in my own name. What do I need?

Thanks in advance.

Id, 3 months payslips and three months bank accounts stamped by the bank.

I just took my Id and work contract to mtn and they accepted, but vodacom didn't.

Edit: O ja, proof of residence, I forgot about that

Vodacom Service Provider:

1. GREEN BAR CODED ID
2. PROOF OF PHYSICAL ADDRESS
3. 3 MONTHS LATEST BANK STATEMENTS
4. PAYSLIP

A salary of R3000.00 is preferable. The system will check your credit rating etc etc and assing a profile to you stipulating what tariffs you would qualify for. The store will inform you accordingly once the application has been processed on the system.

Cool, thanks for the replies. With regards to credit, I don't have a credit record as such (no credit/store cards) besides my student loans, which have been paid off. I have read that not having a credit record is actually a disadvantage - will my paid off student loans be sufficient?

Well, it probably depends on how much you make. When I started working, I got my contract without having a credit record and only had one months pay slip and one months bank account as that was the only time I got paid. I just gave them the copy of my work contract stating my pay and MTN gave me the contract easily. Vodacom didn't because they needed me to be working for three months so that they could see if I receive a regular income. So no, you don't really need a credit record for a contract telephone, but my contract gave me a good credit record when I got a homeloan.

Thanks, that explains it well enough.

Now the only problem I have is number porting. Ideally, i want my new contract ASAP, but my number will still be in use with my old contract. I guess there's nothing I can do about that until the old contract runs out. Can I get a new sim/number now, and then change that number to my old number later on? It will be from one MTN sim to another MTN sim.

I'm guessing not. :|

No, I don't think you can. You have to do the simswap before it picks up on the network last time I did it. How long till the old contract expires? If it is just a month or two I would just pay in the amount owing.

My younger sister applied for a contract with Vodacom and she couldnt get one because she's to young. She's 19 and working, and she has applied for a credit card and Edgars. But still she can't. Don't get it!

Vodacom is usually fussy about giving out contracts eps if you don't have a record. When I started working I also didn't have a credit record and Vodacom wouldn't give me a contract but MTN didn't hesitate.

Bank statements MUST be stamped by the bank. No stamp and its rejected.

Watch out for contracts that get declined. There was a glitch in the MTN system that flagged me for fraud, even though my credit score in in the 900's. It took them a while to get the technicians to clear it.

Hey guys. I've applied for a contract with Vodacom and they declined my application. Is mtn as harsh as Vodacom with contracts or? What are the requirements for mtn

You really need to find out why it got rejected. Every time you apply for credit it is logged with the credit bureaus againts your credit history. The more times you get declined the more likely you are to be declined in future. And so it goes. If you get declined at one operator and then try the next and the next, you will probably get flagged as a possible fraud case (someone trying your details).

I found out that MTN had mistakenly flagged me for fraud (or someone tried to get a MTN contract on my name). I questioned why I had been declined for a R140/pm contract with a +900 credit score. That is how I found out. I got it corrected and no bad marks on my credit history.

Is Vodacom harsh when it comes to contracts? And is Mtn the better choice
Almost certainly the same basic criteria are used to be complaint with the Credit Act. Some operators may be more stringent. As mentioned above, previous attempts to get credit will also affect the outcome.
