Ported from Vodacom to MTN. Couldn't deal with the stutter and dropped calls anymore.

Noticed my iPhone switches back to 3G with calls instead of remaining on LTE? VoLTE was enabled in my phone settings and checked for a carrier update. Is there a way to activate it? MTN calls it HD voice

Call MTN and ask them to enable the LTE and Voice over LTE/HD Voice.

Still, no luck activating it. Have tried phoning the Port Dept and customer care and I have emailed them and nobody seems able to activate HD Voice?

Any luck yet, @Louis72?
Yes indeed got it to work. It was activated.

just do note that when you call a number lets say your Voicemail(132) or customer care the network switches back to 3G for the call. Very interesting behaviour but whenever a normal call happens it stays on LTE.

So far my LTE performance for calls and data has been rock solid. The only thing that needs improvement is the signal quality during a power outage in The Wilgers, Equestria area. Plenty of sites go down and kills my signal during a power failure.

I assume the only benefit for enabling this is a clearer voice call?
Does call cost change?

Indeed the voice quality is very good. No it costs the same.

Furthermore it should increase reliability of calls reaching you and reduce call setup times because it doesnt have to switch to 3G first.

That being said if you almost never have good 4G coverage as what I experienced with Vodacom in Pretoria then it doesn’t benefit you at all and could even have drawbacks on battery life and call drops etc, it might be better to stay on 3G only then.

I am with MTN and I am still waiting for VoLTE. Whenever I make or receive a call it switches over to 3G.

Isn't VoLTE dependent on if your network has activated the service for your device? The device list might differ between Vodacom/MTN.
I can't say that I have been an MTN phone with VoLTE working. The only phone I have been with this running is high-end Samsungs on Vodacom.

Currently working with iPhone 7 on MTN.

Ok thats quite a few phones. And it's set to on by default?
That I am not sure about. When i ported to MTN it was not active and after asking a couple of times for it to be activated on Customer care it started working. Make sure VoLTE is enabled in your phone settings. Do note that phoning your Voicemail or customer care my phone switches back to 3G but it stays on LTE for regular numbers.

Vodacom Samsungs seem to have it on by default. So possibly MTN its off by default, hence why you see so few devices using it.

I have a Huawei P10 Pro and I can't get VoLTE to work despite numerous phone calls to the call centre. Finally figured out that it could be because my phone is not an MTN-branded phone and therefore doesn't have the MTN firmware on it. I suspect that if you don't have the MTN firmware on your phone you won't be able to get VoLTE or VoWIFI to work on the MTN network.

Phoned mtn on 135, pressed 0, and the agent activated it for me within minutes
