I recently visited Zim on roaming on my MTN contract (mind you I also have a local Econet line when there).

I now got a bill for the few calls I made to SA from there. R31.60/minute!
MTN uses Econet when on roaming, and I know very well what Econet charges, that is $1.90/minute which at today's exchange rate works out to R13.68/minute.

140% mark-ups? What the heck????????? :wtf:

According to MTN " Roaming across africa Local R5.00/minute international R7.00/minute"

So i contacted MTN, only to be told "sorry those rates exclude Angola and Zimbabwe, rates are adjusted according to what we get billed by the roaming network"

WTF????

It's not an MTN problem. It's all over the world.

Vodacom costs me about R14/min when I travel to Tanzania, using Vodacom Tanzania on top of it.

Look I understand that roaming charges are not cheap anywhere, but firstly iving out incorrect info, and then back tracking saying "sorry the country you visited is exempt from these rates" while at the same time not advertising or making this info public is fraud. Also, R31.60/minute is redicolous, and over 140% over and above what a customer gets charged by the local networks to make the same calls.

Yeah you 100% right... They do need to work harder on making things easier and more transparent. At the moment, it is a mission just to find out about stuff like this.
