After allegedly putting her life at risk on Friday evening, a Joburg resident, Pam Green, has come forth with details of the events that unfolded which have left her having sleepless nights. They do not put MTN South Africa in a good light…

Pam from Second Chances, who describes herself on Facebook as “just an ordinary person who believes they can change the world”, updated her Facebook status late Monday afternoon to ‘feeling traumatised’ and wrote:

“I have no pictures, or videos to make this sensationalised, but this post needs to be written, read, and shared!

“On Friday night on my way home, driving along the highway, I saw something out of the corner of my eye but carried on driving. And then, 100m further down, I looked in my review mirror and realised that what I had seen was REAL!

“A woman had been pushed out of a moving car, her limp body had tumbled down the grass embankment, and landed in a heap in the emergency lane!!! OMG that’s a woman I screamed and reversed as fast as I could.

“She was screaming, not in pain at first, but in fear: “He’s coming back, go, he’s coming back to kill me”. I immediately called 10111 South African Police Service who I gave our exact location to, and asked them to send the police and an ambulance, to which i was told I had to dial 112 for ambulances, so I pleaded for them to send police in the meantime, and I immediately called 112….The MTN South Africa emergency services line…..

Shocking but expected from MTN, I don't understand though why you' d have to call Mtn 112 if you've already called 10111?

This is SA, where one has to rely on oneself, ANC and ANC members only seems to be interested in stealing, 112 only allows you to connect to other emergency services, then they are supposed to connect you to the relevant service in your area.

I would phone SANRAL on 0800 487 233 if it was me and it was on a highway.

Even more reason for a centralized call center service, ala 911

112 is or was now maybe, a GSM standard, you can dial it from any phone anywhere in the world without a simcard.

this knowledge is from a few years ago, i dont know if it still a standard.

Because 10111 will send police, not an ambulance.

Ideally SA should get a integrated emergency call system but...

the 112 is(was) supposed to be that.

112 will even drop a call on a busy tower to get your call through. or well that was the setup.

Although in theory the 10111 operator could easily alert the medical services - they have all that info on hand. Based on her experience and the subsequent claim that her first call was 'misplaced', I can't say I'm surprised though.

wondered what would have happened if she had called 082 911 or one of the other emergancy services?

maybe they would have been there quicker,

I remember I called them once, and maybe waited 15 min for a non life threatening matter.

The Netcare response time is generally very impressive. I get the impression she dialed the cops first because they were worried the husband would come back, the the 10111 operator told her to call 112 for the ambulance.

I dont think I want my safety in an emergency relying on MTN. I need to move asap

No you don't, I had occasion to call them once and apart from the bored disinterested operator, it took 3 further follow up calls before help arrived.

Might be nice if MTN can investigate the legitimacy of this allegation and formally respond. Am assuming that the calls are monitored naturally.... Call put through to 4 different operators and then the call ended because the caller got incensed about being fekked around.

Anybody @MTN?

Don't all 112 calls go to the same place or does each mobile network have its own little 112 call centre?

i cant remember actually, it seems it has its own call centre. or i thought so.

here is an article about issues with it years ago.

its strange this article makes out as if it was not up and running then, its been a GSM standard as far as i can remember. smoke and mirrors to steal money?

Could have. Should have. But ultimately didn't... She called MTN. They offer a service to subscribers. THAT service appears to be failing. Whats the point of VAS if there is no "V"?
