Please afford me a few kb of space here to bitch at mtn... :)

Yesterday I randomly visited mtn active on the web, typed in my cell number and was greeted with a nice message saying I am due for an upgrade! yay!

Spent whole night reading up on what to get! Got very amped you know the story. quite sad yes

Walced off to mtn today to go claim my new shiny device (Blackberry Curve 8900) and got told that "Its going to be difficult to upgrade" because of a promo fee that is loaded from my current package must serve out the whole 24 months

Fair enough, I requested to pay this only to get a blunt no. Packed up my things and left.

After a bit of thinking i went to go get a second opinion at one of the mtnsp shops in the mall

Explained briefly what i wanted and what the problem was and the helpfull lady decided she would find out from her side if something can be done.

She then said that the upgrade was approved as I started paying the fee/signed the upgrade 24 months ago, even if the actual contract must still go on for 4 more months. This now made sense and it was true - I had paid my 24 months promo fee to mtn for the phone

While we were sorting out the FICA rubbish (the phone box sitting on the counter) she had to call to get the line activated or inactivated or something. The person there now gave us the same crap story as before, and she argued and talked in circles with us for like 20 mins.

In the end she could not hand over the phone, and we left (she promised to find out more and let me know today)

So in the end, MTN is going to fraudulently charge me 28 months of promo fee and not 24 months as signed in contract and there is bugger all i can do about it! Good way to keep a customer

In 4 months I will be voting with my feet and canceling all my and my companies contracts with MTN. All thanks to a stupid computer program that no one can over ride

Thanks for letting me get that out I feel half better :):D

To fix an MTN problem, move to Vodacom - it has been proven as the only way.

I've been caught by the same MTN BS. According to MTN Active I could upgrade, but the upgrade page on the MTNSP site stated differently, in agreement with the in-store system (adding up to 28 months). I've decided to go over to Vodacom as soon as possible and terminate the MTN contract when it reaches its end. The 28 months comes in when one upgraded four months early when the promo was signed-up for.

Got to work this morning and a voicemail was waiting on my phone saying I can come pick up my handset!

I must say a very big thank you to Navadia from Mtn The Bridge in PE - she fought for my rights and won lol :P

Why do we always get that one or two persons who go out of their way to help a client? Because they have a passion for their work. The others just work because they have to.

I was worried when I read this thread. I also upgraded in October last year and low and behold, my information on MTN Active shows that my contract is in its 6th month. October 08 - August 09 is only 6 months? I think not! Which means comes next year I will be having the same fight. Oh boy. I also took the "promo fee" phone. Not looking forward to upgrading next year!

Update: have the phone since Friday, havent been able to use it cause
mtn wont migrate the package for the same reason they wouldnt upgrade, but then did lol

Trying to get them to just add the BIS to the procall which they say must still do 28 months!

I remember when I took the promo offer in 2007 MTN pushed another (seperate) piece of paper under my nose requesting that I sign this to confirm that I accept the speacial terms and conditions applicable to the promo offer. The sales person said it just meant that I couldn't migrate my contract (up or down) in the next 24 months. Clearly this piece of paper said more than that ...

The funny thing is I'm in limbo now, got the phone but no service

Im still waiting for them to ask for the phone back

I had the same issue today with MTN. Now the woman at the store, created the contract, assigned the phone to my contract, then had to cancel it, and now MTN has screwed up my details on MTNActive, and i am now on month 44 of my contract!

Now - MTNActive says I'm eligible, 808 says the same, including the customer service people, but then they say, sorry - due to reasons listed above.

went back to MTNActive, and had a look at the subscriber upgrade policy document - and fulfil all the requirements according to this, but still no joy. Spoke to a customer consultant, and she suggested that I take the document to a Store, and they will be able to do the upgrade. Don't think I'm gonna bother... giving VodaCom a few months to sort out the supply issue on the 3GS, and then will port to them, seeing as MTN just gave me that opportunity with these rules...
