MTU settings - don't quite get it

Hi there,

I have been with iburst for 3 weeks now. The speed has not improved in any way over that time. The average speed I get:

Down: 50kb (that's bits, not bytes) which is slower than my analogue dial up
up: 3kb (yes that is right, only 3!!!!!!)

I keep on hearing about the MTU settings but don't quite understand it.

What do I really put in the Tcp receive window? Does that depend on the MTU setting?
I use a desktop modem connected through a nic. Which MTU do I set? The dial-up RAS or the one that says MTU? what would the right setting be?

Clearly there is a problem with the connection but Iburst have been completely useless at trying to solve it. One reply was: cancel and get a refund.. I would if I had any other option. No coverage for Sentech, No ADSL and not on the roll-out plan for the next 3 years according to Telkom.....The joys of operating from the Townships.

Any help appreciated

Tks guys,

will be testing and playing but.....which of those mtu blocks do I change? the RAS one or the other one or both?

look i think you are barking up the wrong tree here. Changing mtu aint going to cure your problem if you are only getting max of 50kbps.
How about posting some info on signal strength, frame rate error, and some local pings. Then the clever peeps here should be able to point you in a better direction.

Hi Daveogg

signal strenght is 5 lights most of the time. Framerates is lost on me? what is that and how do I check it? pings i will check and post back.

Oh and one more thing. The nic that is the connection with the iburst modem comes up with the message "limited connectivity" (Windows XP-home). Another nic does the same thing. Iburst helpdesk says not to worry about that?

To quote slim not all 5 lights are equal or something liek that.
Try this ping iburst.co.za. Do you average 70 -80ms with little variation or is it all over the place??
Ah and dont worry about that limited connectivity its a windows thingy and does NOT affect your ib connection

I assume you use USB for your modem, if so use the iBurst Terminal program to see your Frame Error Rate and exact signal %

Well now that you mention it
During week office hours at office
sig 92-100
frame error 0-5 rarely values >5 but they are there
local ping iburst.co.za rarely below 400 mostly above 1000
location northriding
signal received from northcliff

The mtu values only doubled my speed from 100kb-200kb

Also in North Riding. Are you sure about connecting to Northcliff? There is a tower in Olivedale now.

Pings to 196.30.31.100 (WBS) 40 - 60ms

our closest towers would be olivedale honeydew or fourways.

Yes they said I always connect at office hours to northcliff.

The other strange thing is the direction i point the arial (provided by iburst) is completely incorrect to northcliff direction.

Any other direction and i have no signal.

for me I point the arial in the opposite direction to get on a tower, its weird but it works

That would be correct if true but then its traveling straight through our corregated iron warehouse roof?

well then maybe i will rotate the arial on tues and point back towards honeydew and maybe ... just maybe problem solved ... for some reason I think i tried that
