MTU Value.

Hi guys.

I would like to here from yuo guys what you have set your MTU Value, and also a reason for doing that. :p

Mine is set to 1292 and i found that this gives me the best speed and stability.
i am 12km from a tower with low signal.

now i have shown you mine where's yours ?? :eek: :p
 
Mine's set to the default of 1352, allthough my modem signals died on me over the long weekend. Took it to the local reseller and he managed to fix it (changed the emulater), will have to test it tonight.

I will try 1292 tonight and see if there is any difference.
 
Thats for that info, I have never really tested messing around with non-1352 MTU values.

I'll try 1292 as my signal is also low.. very low latley :(
 
I have jusr tried it out, but im not shure what you not have to do to make it take effect, must you restart your router (my router does the MTU) or the Iburst modem or just your connection?

OR will it take effefct immediatley?
 
I know in my case (Gigabyte router) I have to reboot the router. normally for things like that, I reboot the router, unplug both the router and iBurst modem from mains, and restart them about 2 minutes later - just to make sure :D
 
Okay, well my router rebooted automatically when I changed it, but ill go unplug the Iburst, be back in a sec and ill se if there is any difference. Too bad im capped.
 
Im , not really shure if it is any better. It works fine alright and speeds for capped and during the day rae good, bbut pings seem a bit high. This could of course be becasue it is the busiest time on a week day.. which im not so used to.

I'll check things out again later today and on the 1st again, see if it works out better for me.
 
I am going to try it tonight ... run some tests before and after, and let you guys know.

It didn't work for me...

I’ve tried the lower MTU setting, it seemed to slow my connection down, however my NIC has been optimised for my connection speed of 1.024 Mb and the MTU value of 1352.

Did it make a definable difference, before I go through the effort of changing my NIC values?
 
Well the lower MTU was suggested for people with poor signal, like me.. and not you, if I remember correctly you had good signal.

Apparently you should play around with either higher or lower MTU's if you have a good connection.. cant remember exactly.. i'll have to dig up one of those old MTU threads.
 
Tests: lowering the MTU on my connection from 1352 to 1292 did the following:

1. The average ping times to www.iburst.co.za dropped from around 139ms to 80ms
2. My speed dropped from around 800kb/s to around 500kb/s

Results: The MTU definitely improved my pings, but reduced my speed by quite a margin

Keep in mind that I have a 98% signal
