Durban - An invasion of Zimbabwe or tougher sanctions to dislodge Robert Mugabe are not on the cards, African National Congress Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said in Durban on Thursday.

"I don't think invading Zimbabwe or sanctions would work," he told journalists and editors at a breakfast in Durban.

He did not believe that the ANC "will subscribe" to an invasion and preferred to deal with Zimbabwe "on a government-to-government level and on a party-to-party level".

"What will we do to make Mugabe retire? We will persuade him."

He said the higher structures of the ANC had discussed Mugabe's reasons for wanting to stay in power.

Mugabe's fears

The arrest of former Liberian president Charles Taylor was affecting any decision Mugabe may make to retire.

Taylor, who was Liberia's president from 1997 to 2003, was forced into exile in Nigeria before being extradited. He was currently being detained at the International Criminal Court detention facility in The Hague and was on trial before the Special Court for Sierra Leone.

"The Hague has taken a number of African people. Mugabe can't be given any guarantees for his safety in retirement," said Mantashe, who claimed Mugabe's fears were real.

He said the party's National Executive Committee had discussed the fears that Mugabe might be facing if he were to relinquish power.

Mugabe - the imperialist colonialist counter-revolutionary Hague wants you !

Ps: This bit really set my mind at ease -

What will we do to make Mugabe retire? We will persuade him."

If the neighbouring countries, mainly South Africa, stopped sending in fuel and support for Mugabe he would be out of power in a matter of days, but no.

Persuade him before or after he dies of old age and gets away with it all?

Yes he should be scared. People shouldn't be allowed to destroy peoples lives for their own benefit. Not even 1 person, nevermind millions. I never would have guessed the ANC wouldn't support the idea of assasinating one of their best/rich friends. Criminals protect eachother. I doubt they would take this stance if Mugabe was white, would they? lol They seem to be so "understanding" and "dosile" when it serves them.

Don't get out of the way of their convoy fast enough, and they want to shoot you..
Leave the ANC and they want to shoot you..

But if you Destroy millions of peoples lives and effectively cause children to starve? They want to talk about it..

I wouldn't want SA to invade Zim because if they (Zims) retaliate, they can take SA navy within minutes, considering the state "our" navy is at. Most of these well planned bank robberies are executed by former Zim soldiers.

Sa can't even fight Swaziland I think. :)
