The founder of the Confucius Peace Prize, a would-be Chinese rival to the Nobel, on Thursday defended this year's award to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who has often been accused of rights abuses.

Qiao Damo, founder of the little-known China International Peace Studies Centre, which runs the accolade, told AFP that Mugabe had been recognised for his "outstanding contributions" to world peace.

The nonagerian African leader beat nine other finalists, including Bill Gates, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and South Korean President Park Geun-Hye, he added.
"If he hadn't come to power in 1980, if he hadn't played a role, how much talent would have been wasted!" said Qiao.
In a statement announcing the award in September, the committee praised Mugabe for being "committed to building the country's political and economic order, for the benefit of the Zimbabwean people", and for his "strong support of Pan-Africanism and African independence".

Human rights groups and opposition politicians accuse Mugabe of overseeing the crippling of his country’s economy and brutal crackdowns, but the prize organisers dismissed their concerns.

Qiao cited Mugabe's "ability to stabilise Zimbabwe and at the same time promote peace in Africa" as chairman of the African Union.
"Unrest is quite normal," he said. "When America was first founded, it was also very chaotic, and Zimbabwe was only founded 30 years ago."

Writing on Zimbabwe's Bulawayo24 news site, Gorden Moyo, secretary-general of the People's Democratic Party, a Zimbabwean opposition party led by former finance minister Tendai Biti, described the award as "insanity".
"Mugabe as we know him and as the people of Zimbabwe have experienced his reign is a war-monger, a bellicosist and a sadist who delights in the misery of the people," he said.
The prize organisers, he added, "should hang their heads in shame for rewarding murderers who masquerade as peace makers".

An award ceremony -- the honour is worth 500,000 yuan ($80,000) this year -- will be held in December, Qiao said, adding the payment was funded by Chinese businessmen he declined to name.
Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told AFP the Confucius prize was "not affiliated with the government".
Qiao said the award was intended to balance the Nobel "from the perspective of Confucian culture", as the Norwegian peace prize was "too extreme and not consistent with facts".

The Fifth Brigade was different from all other Zimbabwean army units in that it was directly subordinated to the Prime Minister office, and not integrated to the normal army command structures. Their codes, uniforms, radios and equipment were not compatible with other army units. Their most distinguishing feature in the field was their red berets.[8]

The largest number of dead in a single killing was on 5 March 1983, when 62 young men and women were shot on the banks of the Cewale River, Lupane.[11] Seven survived with gunshot wounds, the other 55 died. Another way 5 Brigade used to kill large groups of people was to burn them alive in huts. They did this in Tsholotsho and also in Lupane. They would routinely round up dozens, or even hundreds, of civilians and march them at gun point to a central place, like a school or bore-hole. There they would be forced to sing Shona songs praising ZANU, at the same time being beaten with sticks. These gatherings usually ended with public executions. Those killed could be ex-ZIPRAs, ZAPU officials, or anybody chosen at random. The Zimbabwe government repudiated these allegations and accused the hostile foreign press of fabricating stories. The government characterised such allegations as irresponsible, contrived propaganda because it failed to give proper weight to the violence by dissidents.[12]

The dissidents targeted ZANU officials. It is estimated that 700–800 people were murdered by dissident gangs in rural regions.[4] In August 1985, dissidents massacred 22 Shona civilians in Mwenezi. On a mission farm in Matobo, dissidents massacred 16 people.[1"

Acc to many around 20,000 were eliminated by this North Korean trained 5th Brigade in the early 1980s.

There have been NO free, fair and credible elections in Zim since 2000, when the Great African Liberation Hero RGM went berserk, after he realised that Zimbabwe was ready to vote in an opposition party.
Hundreds of opponents have been eliminated, and thousands been tortured over the last 15 years. The first round of the 2008 elections was won by the MDC, after which the ZANU-PF thugs released a wave of violence and intimidation, The MDC controversially withdrew from the 2nd round and Mugabe was again declared president.
Shortly before the 2013 elections in Zim, I met again a Zimbabwean, and asked her whether she was returning to vote. She said no. We chatted a bit, and she told me that she was still in a rural area in her native country during the 2008 elections. Persons which voiced their clear criticism of the ZANU-PF were beaten up and sometimes taken into "reeducation camps".
The 2013 elections were systematically rigged, the voters rolls were totally manipulated. it had some 100,000s deceased persons on it, many voters were refused to vote in their usual districts and sent on election day to vote in remote areas. The "strategic" israeli IT firm Niguv was hired in many months in advance to help process the voters rolls and results.
Many voters were bused from one polling station the other. Many buses from SA were held up unusually long at Beitbridge the day before and the morning of the elections.

It took a very long time to release the results after polling day.
Over the last half year a opposition activist disappeared mysteriously, and a ZANU-PF senior politician, opposing Mugabe was brutally murdered.

Mugabe and his cruel cronies should be dragged in front of the ICC in The Hague ASAP, just like Omar al Bashir of Sudan. Instead we role out the red carpet for them here in SA. And are ever more cosying up to the Chinese and Comrade Putin.
 
The only "peace" that Mugabe deserves is the stuff you get when you rest in it. Even then I think he'll struggle to find this when he meets his Maker and has to account for the seed he sowed.
