Multichoice - Price Fixing?

Rights to sports and "production of programming" are linked to how many subscribers you have? Guess I don't have a clue. I bow down to your superior knowledge because you know more than DSTV about me. I was not aware that there was a shortage of space in space.

actualy its quite crowded up there The United States Space Surveillance Network currently tracks more than 8,000 man-made orbiting objects orbiting the earth. :)

Also spectrum is limited. I am sure that they have to pay someone a lot of money for theirs ... ICASA?

Price fixing
  • Agreeing with competitors to manipulate prices in some way.
  • Punishable by law (CC)

Recommended retail price
  • Telling distributors that you'll cut them off if they don't sell at RXXXX.
  • Largely legal

Why charge 3k for a pvr?
Same answer as Telkom & ADSL pricing: Because they can.

with dstv's"anti piracy' stance they maried the decoder to smard cards so dreambox etc will only work for a month or 2 then be blocked, as for your other ide since they are the only provider theree is no need for them to offer anything for free since they have a manopoly no need for them to get us to sign a 24 month contract as no competition for them to deal with

that i agree with you on,
No, a Dreambox will work relatively well. You may struggle to get a decent EPG going, but it does clear and update with the 'right' software. Sometimes MC sends ECM's that try and freeze the signal too.
Also, any decoder with an Irdeto CAM should clear.

maybe any1 here come right with that? i aint forking out cash for a dreambox if it aint gonna work

the question i have to ask is what is the point of a recommended retail price? why not let the companies that sell the decoders determine the price between themselves and the consumer?

Then why don't they?

they do ocasionaly see makro or games birthday or opening sales and youll see what im talking about and i cant remember which store but they had 1 where if you bought a samsung plasma or lcd tv they were giving away a free hdpvr, and incredible coruption had it with a cellphone contract (without increased monthly subscription) recently.
I remeber once i was in a makro and they had 5 on sale for R200 (where the anoying dud on the PA system says amzing deal today only etc) they got sold in no time and i bet none of the people who bought it actualy came in for the pvr
