MultiChoice profits fall, getting ready to compete with Netflix

shame... repeat. shame... repeat. shame... repeat. shame...

I know how they can be competitive, let them reduce their prices...

Please urgently fade into irrelevance monochoice. Can't happen soon enough.

Or to put it eloquently...

Multichoice, please do us all a favour and procreate elsewhere and pass away.

Surely you jest, this is MonoChoice we are talking about here and there is no such thing as a poppycock mythical price reduction. Away with you and your suggestions of competition, MonoChoice would rather be bankrupt than reduce its pricing.

They lose profits yet boast their subscriber numbers. Subscribers are not the be all and end all but rather quality of subscribers. Cheap soccer packages towards black people won't cut it. The only way to retain the white people that have always been their bread and butter is to reduce prices and offer better packages with custom channels. Netflix and broadband can't come soon enough for this country.

I don't suppose MC has a racial breakdown of their subscribers over the years.

Why do you guys hate MultiChoice so much? Have you forgotten that the real monochoice was SABC TV?

I also don't get why people think Netflix is competition for DStv. I don't know anyone who subscribes to DStv just for the movies, series and soaps. At best, Netflix supplements just one part of the media content mix. Or what am I missing?

SABC is much cheaper. I don't get much more choice for R505 per month.

It's the "in thing".

My wife's biggest complaint is the repeats, especially of the documentaries. She hardly watches movies and series and never watches sport, while I only watch news and sport.

Would I like DSTV to offer custom channel selection? Hell yeah! But I do understand that it could end up costing me more than I'm currently paying.

Would I like more competition in the broadcasting market? Hell yeah! But we'll need somebody with very deep pockets to compete for the top shows, movies, sporting events, etc.

Good news, proves fewer premium subscribers are willing to subsidise channels not aimed at their demographic. Bring on Netflix.

English speaking subscribers do not subsidise the Portuguese bouquet, in the same way that the Indian bouquet is only paid for by those wanting the Indian bouquet. The same should apply to African channels as a large percentage of those paying for them have never watched ten seconds of those channels.

Let me think...

Arrogance, ignorance, and incompetence.

That sums it up nicely.
Look, I don't know these people. I'm not a supplier or shareholder. I have no family or known relatives who work there. I'm nothing but a subscriber.

Who's arrogant? Their help desk people? I've always found them very helpful. What horrible experiences have you had? Arrogant management? How do you know? You a supplier?

Ignorant? Of what? They've always answered every question I've asked, and dealt politely and efficiently. I'd very much appreciate an explanation so I can know the facts and stop languishing in my own ignorance about them.

Incompetent? How did they let you down? What didn't they know or do that they should have? Again, I'd appreciate you sharing your real experience because I'm obviously unaware of these grave failings.

Sure they're not cheap. But that's not your complaint - you have much graver issues.

I'm fascinated by how different experiences and impressions can be. My wife tells me I have unreasonably high expectations for quality and politeness of service, so it's not that I'm too thick-skinned to notice.

Right now, my own sense is that MultiChoice is a great South African company, with exceptional customer service. Help me out and share the facts so I can be disabused of my ignorance.

Arthur. You ever been a member on their forum? I have and tried to help them sort out simple things like the lip-sync issue. 4 years later and it is still noticeable. They would not admit there was an issue. Always blaming your equipment. Even telling them I see it on different decoders in different town and countries did not make them admit to it. Or sort it out. I saw it just a few weeks again.

I cancelled my DSTV in January and have not looked back. I do miss the sport, but now I go to pubs or friends places to watch it in a social environment. The wife and kids does not miss it at all. There is life after DSTV. And Arrogant, ignorant and incompetent does describe them well. Like I said, join their forum and try and help them solve problems.
