Multichoice will no longer run a television advertisement promoting its decoder exchange arrangement for viewers, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has heard.

Consumers complained that the commercial indicated that Multichoice was swapping old decoders free of charge, and that customers simply needed to visit their nearest Multichoice agent and "make the swap for a new one".

At one point during the commercial, a small disclaimer, appearing in white font against a light green background reads: "Terms and Conditions apply. Not applicable to SA."

"In essence, the complainants argued that the commercial (which was broadcast in South Africa) was misleading, because the trade-in offer is only available to viewers outside South Africa," ASA said.

Multichoice said the offer was meant for viewers outside South Africa, but that the viewers shared the same satellite as South African viewers, which was why the commercial was also seen here.

However, Multichoice said it had discontinued the commercial and it would not be used again.

"The directorate is inclined to agree with the complainants that the disclaimer is hardly legible, appears for such a short period and is not prominent at all," ASA said.

"However, as the respondent appears to concede this point, and as it has since removed the commercial with permanent effect, the directorate regards this as an adequate resolution to the matter at hand."

Yet people insult Mbete etc for lack of clarity, when corporates such as these swindle billions everyday through "misleading" (i.e. connig) and stealing from the public!

So essentially MC put their foot in it. Again.

The stupid is strong with this one

This is what never fails to get me - as long as they withdraw the ad nothing is done about false and misleading advertising.

Right now, I know the feeling of being involved with anything relating to Multichoice SA. They are refusing to sell me their "precious" DSTV explora as part of the Telkom 10Mbps upgrade promotion that actually includes this "precious" as part of the deal! They want me to pay for the "precious" decoder upfront. F-off Multichoice!

Wrong section?

is this person just trolling here on this forum? I think that we need some divine intervention from the admins or mods please. it's getting a tad over board now and it's starting to annoy many of us.

In what way are you forced to read his posts?

Now Multichoice just need to remove the constant simcard checking as well.

It takes my decoder almost 15 minutes to scan all channels and do authentication after loadshedding.

It's becoming extremely annoying. :(

That drives me mad too! Should pick up your last viewed channel immediately and scan the rest in the background. Alltech are messing around.
