MultiChoice reports 44% increase in Showmax subscribers

Showmax subscriber surge

MultiChoice has reported a 44% increase in Showmax subscribers just over a year after the video streaming service was relaunched, despite withdrawing the service from countries outside Africa.

Showmax 2.0 was rolled out in February 2025 as a joint venture between MultiChoice and Comcast's NBC Universal, with the former holding a 70% share and the latter the remaining 30%.

I must say that when Showmax launched initially it felt like a just about acceptable South African product.

When they relaunched with 2.0 the web and app experience felt like a world class product. Big ups

Agreed, that is seriously lacking. Hence me saying on the web and the iPad. Their bitrate is a bit low for a 65” TV. I am by no means a fanboy. But recently I’ve started watching some of the HBO stuff from them and the experience has been good.

Dear MyBroadband, can you please help resolve the persistent live streaming delay issue on Showmax? Specifically, Premier League streams on Showmax lag behind DStv Stream. For instance, during a match like Man City vs Liverpool, DStv Stream might be 10 seconds behind the decoder broadcast, while Showmax is an additional 30 seconds behind DStv Stream.


Given that both platforms likely share the same source, it's puzzling that Showmax consistently lags, engage Showmax executives to investigate and fix this issue for subscribers. This delay affects not just Premier League but also PSL games.


I would appreciate it if you could test this during the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
