Hi all,

I'm looking at buying a multimedia player/hdd enclosure thingy, was wondering if anyone has one they can highly recommend. I had the previous model MVIX 5000, and it was ok, but not great. I heard the 6000 series are much better, anyone have any comments? Suggestions?

thx

Maybe you should look at the Philips DVP5960/86k DVD player.

I hear you can get a decent seagate SATA2 hard drive (1TB would be nice:) ), put it in an enclosure (SATA, not sure which make/brand would work though).

Some users report that the Western Digital Mybook Essential series (external HDD's) work fine, but I am appalled by WD's 1-year warranty. Just look at the reviews on it's product page on amazon.

thanx soulman, that is another good strategy i will look into, something nice about stuff like the mvix is that the software is upgradeable, which is cool, whereas a dvd player is pretty much closed...although, i hear some are upgradeable nowadays too. I will researc both options a little closer.
Anyone else got any recommendations?

Can I ask what you did not like about the MVix 5000?

We use ours pretty much all day since we bought it.... except that my 500 Gb HDD just dies on Friday... but other than that... we love it.

As a owner of one of these, It does not work well. The philips does not handle ntfs, and if you format fat32 and then dump a lot of stuff, sometimes it does not read the directory structure correctly. To add to my annoyance, the usb port is dead slow. I encode my own movies at fairly high bitrates for archiving (about 1.8 gig for a 2 hour movie), and the usb port chokes on it. Burn it to disc, and it plays fine.

Oh, and don't expect long filename support. It gives you the good old 8 character filenames :-)

Same problems with my Telefunken DVD recorder. I would not buy one of these again. I prefer my MVix player!

This little player works quite well if you excuse the terrible remote control.

Just plonk a drive inside and it acts like a external bay with playback functionality.

Will it work with a Seagate SATA2 500GB NTFS-formatted drive?

If not, which drive would you recommend?

No problems with freezing/lockups?

How long does it take for the video file to start playing from the time you select it?:)

I bought one for my dad a while back. I think this model (without the LCD) has only IDE connection but it does support NTFS.

I've heard no problems about freezing or locking up but it's sometimes picky with what files you play although probably as much as any other non-PC file player.

As for the loading time, there is a small wait time, depends on the size of the show.

thanx for all the responses guys.

reagrding the mvix, I never had any real problems with it, except I had the 5000 unit and it is now discontinued. The 6000 unit looks good with HD upscaling.
The Zion one looks ok too, just half the price of the mvix :)

I also met a chinese dude at the computer faire today, they're selling a HDD mediaplayer enclosure for 560, whats nice about this one is that it has a 'usb as host' feature, so you can plug in any usb storage device and you can copy to your hdd. Thats quite cool. Also they have a card reader on the thing, which also nice.

Only problem is that the video playback is quite a low resolution.
Then theres this guy they also selling....a dvr

Both units are available in SATA or IDE and cost only R560 all inc for the HDD mediaplayer and R620 for the DVR

I placed an order this week for the Mvix MX-780HD model. I've since cancelled the order as there is a new MX800HD model coming out in a few months and apparantly the 780 was just a cheap revamp of the 760.
This type of box is the way forward imo. HDMI, wi-fi, ethernet, usb hosts...it does it all.

Good idea. I've got the 780HD and it's a waste of money. I had the 5000U before it and the 780HD is actually slower for some reason and doesn't support MKV files.

That sounds like a rebranded Mvix 5000U?

Got any pics of the UI?
