Does anyone know of a decent implementation of multiple desktops in windoze that is not tied to a graphics controller (i.e. works with different graphics chipsets)? I am using virtual dimension, but I would like some more features - like different wallpapers per desktop, visual indication on the taskbar, etc... kind of like linux - if it is at all possible...
and very important - I don't want huge overhead - RAM, disk thrashing, etc.
Thanks!

Have you tried Microsoft's Virtual Desktop Manager? Its on Microsofts powertoys page.

There is also another tool called UltraMon i think. Works very well, and does exatly what you describe. Sorry that I dont have a link, but I know it is avaliable on the internet...

Ultramon is not free :)
Virtuawin looks very promising - nice and small! Am trying now...
M$ powertoy is finnicky
Dexpot looks very cool but a little over the top for my liking...

Virtuawin is awesome!
Just what I wanted... nice n fast and to the point with extras - thanks n1hilist!

No problem!

It's also one of the few VWM's I've found that don't lose application toolbars, ie: switching to desktop 2 would sometimes leave Photoshop on 1 but carry it's toolbars over to desktop 2.

Virtuawin is awesome!
