My car licence expired on 31 July 2017. I was away for most of July & August, and completely forgot about it when I got back. I have subsequently received two fines for the expired licence:
- One on 27 August 2017, I did not actually see the traffic officer or physically receive the fine (i.e. not placed on my window even). In fact the first I heard of it was (12 September 2017) when I received an sms informing me of the Final Notice with a link to the ticket. This was after the 21 day grace period so fair play to the traffic officer for being so diligent.
- The second was on 11 September 2017, I was dropping my mom off at the airport when a traffic officer stopped by my car and gave me a ticket (I was literally hugging my mom goodbye when this happened).
For both fines I can't really see what period I have before a summons is issued. I also didn't receive a court date. I don't understand why a fine is necessary because you pay a penalty for late renewal anyway.
PLEASE NOTE: I did renew the licence today (12 September 2017), day after receiving the second fine.
I have the following questions:
- How many times can I receive a fine for the same violation? They are each R500. Could I have got a fine everyday until I renewed?
- Does it matter that I didn't physically receive the first fine?
- How long do I have after receiving the final notice before a summons is issued?
Thanks
