Multiple IP address congestion

Question: my router is set to DHCP. It allocated plenty multiple dynamic ip addresses to my 4 pc's and ipad until all 254 addresses are taken then it seems to freeze. So i have one mac address with say 42 ip addresses. Especially the ipad on wireless. Why is this and how can i stop this? Is the router broken?
