Here's How:

Tap the Message icon on the iPhone to open the SMS program.
Tap the writing icon in the top right corner.
Tap the + sign on the far right to add a recipient to the SMS message. After one has been added, tap the + again to add more. Continue this until all desired recipients are added.
Then compose and send the message. It will go to all recipients listed on to "To:" line.

Just keep in mind that what the phone will do is to send a single sms x number of times. I.e. you're going to get charged for 12 sms's.

Also keep in mind that when people reply, they reply to the entire thread. Meaning you will not know who replied unless they add their names to the reply. Your best bet will be to DELETE the message you send to multiple recipients, then the replies will come through individually.

Pro tip!

When I have attempted to send to multiple people in the past one or two have mentioned tha they got an MMS from me - are these things related?

I never send MMS.

No idea slinky, I have never experienced that. Using Swirly on a 2G iPhone, which, technically does not have MMS capabilities into the stock sms app...

Yea... the people in question both use ancient hand me downs too so I basically wrote them off as out of context problems.
