An astonishing number of guns have gone missing from municipalities, the police ministry says.

A preliminary audit had shown that the number of guns lost ranged from one at one municipality, to some 500 at another which the ministry did not name.

The announcement follows revelations earlier this year about the number of guns lost by or stolen from police - 2575 in the 2008/09 financial year alone.

The ministry said municipalities owned 17,482 firearms. Just under half of them were owned by Gauteng municipalities.

Northern Cape municipalities had the least with 64 firearms.

It was apparent that some municipalities had effective, up-to-date control measures while others were "completely below depth".

Minister Nathi Mthethwa had ordered the police's central firearms registry to investigate and to make recommendations on how the police could help municipalities tighten their firearms controls.

The ministry also said that steps would be taken to recover 42 guns not returned by members who left the police.

Geez those are some scary numbers. What's even more frightening is the lack of accountability. If you owned a gun, misplaced it and went to the cops you'd probably see some jail time yet these guys seem to be distributing them at street corners.
 
I always like to put my support behind the police... but this makes it very hard to support them.

We are the ones who are going to be looking down the barrels of those guns.
 
These guys can go **** themselves now, seriously. These MORONS have the gall to threaten us with up to 25 years in jail if we're caught with an illegal firearm and yet the they're the ones "losing" firearms left, right and center! UN-BLOODY-BELIEVABLE!

Is it really that hard to also apply the rules (and enforce them too, naturally) to the members of the police farce themselves? At least PRETEND to be doing your job!

I actually now support the use of illegal firearms. Let's all go get ourselves an AK for home protection and watch these a-holes try and enforce their way out of a wet paper bag.
 
there should be a rule - if you lose your gun once in 5 years - fine, replace it then - but if you lose 2 guns during 5 years, they give you a batton to use against criminals.

Or use the 3rd one on you, since you are giving them to criminals in anycase..

That's very leniant. I would make losing your first gun a dismissible offence.
