Municipal Metropolitan Networks

I hope you guys have read the article about the Durban network on the home page of this site. (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=2132)That is pretty exciting news for us all - should the talk materialise. However, as we all know too well, talk is cheap in SA.

This has the potential to significantly increase competition and hopefully result in the lowering of telekom prices. If Telkom fails to respond by lowering prices and upgrading services, we all just switch over to the metropolitan network and its bye bye to Telkom for good! Any thoughts? Is there any way we can speed up this process? I would be happy to volunteer for a trial

Kryon_MC - I fully support any broadband project like I'm sure most do on this forum but like you say talk is cheap.

I don't know how long it will take but I think we have to start looking at what is happening the States. courts are starting to outlaw municipal wireless networks that of lower or free internet as it is impacting on the ISPs... more the ISPs then the telecom company but them to I'm sure as Telephone and Internet merge to be more transparent.

I just hope that this does not happen in my lifetime as I'm not sure i could continue to crusade for 20 years.

I'm hoping that the battle will be won to get faster cheap internet and telephone calls in Durban in a few years time. and when i say cheap i mean cheap.

What you are saying about the ISP's is true. There should be a model whereby the ISP's can sell bandwith on the metropol network. Free calls etc. could be the responsibily of the municipality but the bandwidth is supplied by the ISP's.

ISP's should learn to adopt to. If they cannot add value in the chain they should be removed.
