Murder suspect arrested after almost 15 years


Just when he thought he got away with a murder that happened almost fifteen years ago, Senki Mavin Mokoena (39) was arrested by the Bethlehem Detectives when he least expected. Mokoena was arrested at his workplace at one of the firms in Vanderbijlpark on Sunday 7 February 2021.

Mokoena was a detainee together with seven other co-accused during September 2006 when they allegedly assaulted Petrus Tshabalala who was 40 years then, and later died. His accomplices were later sentenced and served their term while Mokoena refrained from attending court for the same matter.

Police have since been on his tracks until his ultimate arrest on Sunday 7 February 2021 and the case was heard on Monday 8 February 2021 and he was found guilty. His sentencing was announced by the Magistrate on 10 February 2021. Just like his co-accused, Mokoena is expected to spend 90 days in prison and four years wholly suspended.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane has commended investigating officer Detective Captain Jabulani Victor Mbonambi for making sure that he left no stone unturned in insuring that Mokoena faces the music just like his accomplices. This should serve as a warning to other criminals who think they can commit crime and get away with it.

You should take the whole thing with a pinch of salt in the absence of other information, the guy apparently committed murder, did not bother showing up for his trial and evaded police for 15 years, that alone should mean there are more charges he should be facing. But the SAPS were not going to be bothered in providing all the background information including the circumstances that led to the seemingly light sentence for murder.

I would be very surprised if what he did does not automatically make the suspended sentence to fall away, there must a condition that covers this sort of thing.

I would really hope so, but even 4 years is not even close to good enough really.
 
What kind of justice is this? A man lost his entire remaining life. He was in contempt of court. A fugitive of justice for 15 years.
90 days - 4 years? I don't understand.
It's making a mockery. Such a light sentence could encourage others to follow in his footsteps.
 
Those poor policemen. Especially the Detective Captain.

Actually in the absence of further information that would appear to be the entirety of the story. 90 days for the assault. A four year suspended sentence for evading the police :ROFL:

No, it just means the police did not have enough information about what happens to the guy from here or they cannot be bothered to find out, they have done their job after all which was to arrest the chap.
There is also not enough information to know the circumstances that led to the seemingly light sentence for murder.

From here more information about his sentence will be with the correctional department, I don't understand why people want to believe that a person who evaded police and did not attend his trial could just rock up and do his 90 days and continue with the suspended sentence, the police are clueless and the ill informed statement is expected from them. The guy most likely broke the conditions for the suspended sentence and will be going to jail.

Looks like that just affirms my previous statement that this should be taken with a pinch of salt, the statement from the police says he was wanted for murder, you article says nothing about murder.

Actually the police statement and the article you posted paints two completely different pictures about the same incident.
 
You’ll never escape the long arm of the law. But fortunately that long arm has a very loose grip.
