A friend asked if i would put 3 of his cds on his mp3 for him as he does not have a pc but the tracks are marked .cda and the programme i use to convert my stuff does not work and wants me to download Directx 9 or 10.

i think i may have had a similiar problem a few years ago which i sorted out but i do not remember how i did it, what other way is there to convert the tracks?

thanks.

cool thanks man i will have a look now. like i said i have done it before with my own cds to my mp4 but i have forgotten how i did it.

.cda file extensions are just shortcuts to the actual audio tracks. The files contain no audio and are basically useless when you copy the files to a music player or your hard drive.

Windows Media Player converts audio cd's to MP3. It automatically rips to .WMA format, so you'll have to change the setting to rip to MP3. You can do this in the options menu under the Rip Music tab.

If it's Media Player that isn't working on your PC, try FreeRIP. You can download a free version that will rip and convert audio from CD's.

ok thanks genetic i will have a look at that too, so why does the cd say its a .cda file?

The .cda files are representations audio tracks on a CD. It's merely an index (or a link) to the location of the audio track on a CD, and can only be read from a CD-ROM. So copying it will only copy the link to the track, and not the track itself.

Windows will only display the index to the audio tracks as a .cda file, and not the actual audio itself. Only a ripper will be able to copy the actual audio off the CD.
