Thanks, criticism is welcome. As Fastracker runs in DOS I probably have no hope in re-mastering it with today's software as I would love to actually go back and rework some of my tracks. Nice idea :)

Thanks, I'm a fan of the slow build-ups and release, never really had much experience with drums back then so most of the percussion is copy-and-paste, but you can keep adding and eventually get a nice release.

Still trying to pull your tracks off soundcloud, lol my internet connection is broken today - 5KB/s - will give some feedback when I do. Will also start listening to the other artists here soon :)

Using Renoise as well with various VSTs, samples and Soundfonts. I really need to finish something so I can post from this decade ;)

You can load XMs into Renoise, I've started remastering some old XMs and resurrecting old material from the grave.

I don't use Soundfonts, use VSTs, normal samples etc; I also do a lot of sound mangling, lots of experimentation with FX, drop me your mail and I'll send you my EP done 100% with Renoise :)

I tried pulling in my XMs like that but eventually gave up, a lot of the special features (or quirks) that I used extensively don't import well - or to say Renoise doesn't have those quirks.

Yeah, I've had the same problem, but at least it's better than starting from scratch and 'copying' your work. I've also had some trouble loading in old Renoise songs (from say, Renoise 1.5) into 2.5/2.6 and some FX I've used sound a bit wonky, they've obviously changed some of the parameters for some of the built in plugins.

I think daw + vsts really is the way to go, reason and record are just too sonically limited to be anything other than a sketchpad (I hope this doesn't spark the old reason debate) but yeah, i said it :-)

I just like them a lot for some reason, although the more I think about it, the lack of VST just makes me want to cry.

just use reason as a rack - rewire it into reaper and then you can have your favorite bad sounding reason-thingy as a sound module and use VSTs! :D

I guess, ultimately I am just trying to avoid the slog of learning the intricacies of a big fancy DAW.

What you said about Reaper is true, the manual is like hundreds upon hundreds of damn pages long though, so for such a tiny program, there's a hell of a lot of substance to it. I think I'll meander my way into it.

Reaper is even skinable - you could make a ReCord skin for it if that would make you feel better - anyway record essentially is a DAW - just without any of the good stuff!
 
got my ****ing tuning device today for cello, now tomorrow i must contact my tutor to arrange classes :)
 
TBH I haven't used Renoise, Cubase (lookated at it a bit) Renoise lets me have a sampler, sequencer, VST host and allows me to manipulate samples in the sequencer, same with VSTs and work with recorded guitar in one interface.. Granted I've been using this method since 1994 or so and I've molded into it, but when I've looked at apps like Reason I shudder.

But there's no golden ticket here, some of the best music I've heard has been produced in the most basic ways, using low quality mics, low quality amps and cheap instruments. I'm not an audiophile at all, I think a good pair of monitors is essential for mixing and getting a rich sound, but sometimes that buzzing on a bad cable and gritty mic adds to the groove.

Copa, grab whatever and start, don't fret about software, you can do wonders in anything - you sound like you're holding back until you have a specific threshold on tech - start now ;)
 
I know I sound like a groupie here, but uJochi's EP is bloody marvelous man, sheesh *puts it on again*

Hehehe, glad you like this stuff. Those parallel port DACs were awesome, I still have mine a friend built for me in a box somewhere. He used to fit everything into the plug itself with an RCA connection at the back.

Fancy! Mine didn't have a box or a circuit board, it looked like a fire hazard waiting to happen, or some evolved giti-daddy long legs hehehehe, but it worked! Man those were the days.
