Musicians' thread.

As I said last week I was working on a track which was themed more to video game music, so I decided to open it up today and finish it, I feel it is more of first person shooter type of game.
Here it is: http://soundcloud.com/alphawolftsume/enter-to-the-unknown

In terms of time of play it still needs to be stretched, which can be done as I have many ideas which can be put into the song.
The track is not mixed, but I thought why mix it, if the sound becomes "full" it would take away from the game.
So what do you think?

Have you considered adding a bit of variation into the melody and the volume of the notes, particular the piano? I think a variation of the volume of the notes you're playing would help the track a lot.

Howdy tsume!

As you say, you need to flesh it out a little. I also recommend varying the bass drum beat a little every 8 bars or so. It's a nice relaxed track and I think it could do very well with some well placed flurries of ghost snare hits.

Anyway, I shouldn't be allowed to offer advice until I post something actually. :p

'Kay, I am getting sick and tired of not having anything in this thread yet!

A couple of minutes ago, I came up with a simple 4 bar loop, just a bass line and a simple melody. I have set myself a challenge - To finish something I can post before I go to sleep.

Wonder if it's possible?

Nihilist, I know I am violating your rule here, but I need to post something! :p

Nice. I am learning to play In The Mood on the piano.

copa, dude. Post the track you emailed me last night man. Sheesh.

I will KEEL YOU! How could I possibly post a trance type track that doesn't contain an epic breakdown and subsequent explosion! That's why the file was called half, it's only half a track!

I did do some other variation of melody's and sort, but for this mix I just kept it simple & short...all the variations are on separate tracks and are muted. But the adjustment of volume will be something which I will have to look at later

This is a good start to something, but I feel it suffers a little from being quote repetitive, and the strings need some work in the arrangement department, I'm not sure if you were going for a naturalistic string sound but the strings sound very programmed and don't have any naturalistic expression you'd normally associate with string parts in the gaming genre.

A good start but still needs lots of work, given the very high standards of gaming music these days.

SILENCE! hehehehe (actually, come to think of it, is that your working album title? :D:D:D)

's cool man, hurry up and impress us :)

Strings where definitely made to sound more midi synthesised then natural. The track was actually based on 90's gaming era music (i.e. Duke Nukem, Mech Commander, Unreal, MDK), so repetitions and slow building of songs is definitely something I associated with that era.

I've done alot of changes making it more "90's gaming" after taking some advice on here and listening to Duke Nukem 3D - Stalker (very synthesised but a good song squeezed into midi soundcards), for some reason it's reminding me of Contra

Fek. Since I posted this all I've managed is a lame sounding lead melody.

Darn.

Mother****er. That was a hassle.

All Your Bass Are Belong to Us.

Finally, after hundreds of posts, a musical contribution by the idiot who started the damn thread.

I reckon it'll be a cool intro to an album.

It lacks embellishments as my PC gave up the ghost completely while I was working on it.

Anyway.

Night folks.

:D

Can't sleep now. :/

Two things I've realized, and it took me ages to realize them:

A) When you are mixing a track, try and avoid boosting EQ if possible, rather cut and raise the volume of a given track. When you do boost a frequency, try not to boost the same frequency on another instrument. Keep in mind there is only so much sonic space that you need to fit everything into.

Realize that each track can sound sad and wimpy in isolation, that's necessary for them to all have space for one another when they are mixed together.

This might seem obvious to most of you, but man did it take me an age to wrap my head around what that meant in practical terms.

B) Learn intimately about compressors and precisely what they do. They are a magnificently important part of music, especially electronic type stuff.

I like it a lot copa.. nice choice of sounds and nicely arranged. Sure the mix could be better but thats something that takes a long time to learn.. and the learning process never ends :-)
