Musicians' thread.

I finally put one of my songs to animé to make a AMV.

Since I mixed the song and did some touches here and there, the song on soundcloud is old, I'll update it later tonight or tomorrow.

Blocked, copyright fiend! :D

Upload it somewhere else maybe?

Another great track for all you guitarists, one I'm working on atm. It's not very complicated, some hard grinding rock chords. Just google the tabs. Hope that helps.

Stay tuned for a prog rock tune copa and I have been working on together... :D

Hey if you can recommend anything better I'm all ears!

Sorry, was about to answer on the day but forgot too.

Since you'll probably be record live sounds and will probably use computer generated sounds/instruments as backing. Cubase/Neundo maybe up your alley. But Cubase/Neundo are quite difficult to get grips with, so you can use this software to record live and rewire other music programs (will explain if needed).

I use Propellerheads Reason 4 as my main production. But lacks in recording live sounds, but you may need to check out the new version which seems allow recording.
I also use Ableton Live, which I think would be a really good start point for you, as it also has recording features.

There are other programs such as FL studios (FruityLoops), but I despise the program as it uses a pattern system rather than bar system found in most production software. There's also eJay but it's mainly a sample based software and recording live is quite difficult.

At the end you'll have to decide what suites you, and if it makes the music making process great for you

Holy ****.

I wish I could do that.

Greetings guys, thanks copacetic for starting this thread... I used to play alot more than I do now - the joys of having kids... but I play Clarinet, Sax, Guitar - mainly accoustic, and of course the MP3 player like the rest of you...

I have a q for the drummers in here - I want to get my son a set, he's 13, turning 14 this year and I'd like to get him something that will last but I can't afford more than R5500. Is it really worthwhile getting a serious brand name, or should I aim at a good condition second hand no-name that's full size so he can decide if it's what he likes? He may not take to it, but of course I have my own motives for getting them ;)
I have a seperate studio now so we can jam without disturbing the neighbours which is a good thing, I just can't move the freaking piano in there, although perhaps I should consider giving it a permanent home there too...
Who else out there drums (not talking rock band for Wii here :) )?
Any advice would be appreciated!

I hope there's at least one drummer in here, who can help you. :D

You say you have a separate studio, is it soundproofed? How do you not disturb the neighbours, that's so cool.

encryptedbread, I'm not a drummer or a parent but the practical side of me would suggest starting off with something basic, cheap and second hand but not limited or junk and if he aspires and grows musically then get something good for his 16th birthday or something.

Also a good motivator IMO, if he excels and aspires he gets a *good* set ;)

I'm a drummer, been playing about 11 years now.

Encryptedbread, you say you have around R5500 to spend yeah? Check out gumtree and junkmail, you can get a very solid brand name kit with decent entry-level cymbals for a bit less than that second hand. Something like a Tama rockstar or Pearl Export, or a Yamaha kit, all of those are solid brands to look for that will last and sound good. Don't be tempted to get some cheap Chinese-made crap. It'll break, the hardware will come apart, the cheap cymbals you get with it will crack and warp in no time. A good brand name kit will retain its value as long as you look after it, unlike the el-cheapo Chinese stuff.

Cymbal brands to look for with the kit would be zildjian, paiste, sabian, istanbul, meinl...

Sorry if this question has been asked before, cant go through the entire thread. What would you recommend as a good beginner guitar for about R2k - R3k? I play acoustic and would like to start playing electric soon. I'm sorted with an amp, just need the guitar. I know that I will need to go to a music store and test out their guitars in my budget, its just that I want to get an idea of what brands/makes/models to look out for or to avoid completely. Any suggestions?

I'm no expert, but the obvious question is what sort of style you are hoping to play?

As much as any of us can recommend anything as well, your best bet is actually to go down to a couple of music stores, advise the employees of your budget and just play a couple of guitars that they have in stock. I made this mistake once - Never buy something you have not played before.

Ignore anything the salespeople say, aside from 'here, try this one'.

Then once you have a list of a couple of guitars, post it here, and also check out as many reviews as you can yourself.

Then, narrow the list down to 3 guitars or so, go back the store and play those three again, and make your choice, secure in the knowledge that you have more than adequate knowledge and experience with the given guitar to make a good decision.

If I say, 'Ibanez is great, don't buy Cort', I'm not really saying much, am I?

:D
