Musicians' thread.

I find I forget songs pretty quick. I realize months later when I hear a song and say hey I used to play that!! Does this happen to everyone? Think I need to sit and make a song list or something.

Currently am still trying to nail constant motion by DT, the last quarter of the lead break kills me every time :( it is a song I just can't put down when I am so close but I just can't break that final speed and accuracy barrier :o

Back to the metronome I go :D

Been playing guitar and bass for about 15 years now and surprisingly the only stuff I can remember when I pick a guitar up is the stuff I played in the early days.
I hardly play these days but my brother is busy restoring an original Vox AC30 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VOX_AC30) so will have to give that a go when he is done.

I laugh, even my Grandmother who was pretty good with piano back in her day (apparently played once or twice on stage) was asked many many years later by a friend to play some piano for a group. She could not believe they thought she could still play.

Hi guys!

Give me some feedback/comments/criticism. Just note that the music video itself, was a cellphone shot, simple concept to accommodate the song, so do not think too much of it.

This was just some fun I had (and I mean it was done while I was heavily entertained/amused).
Just by the way, one can deduce from the title that I use some...lewd language. Do not watch it if you do not like a few (well, more than a few) swear words.

That is such a ****ing cool song.

You sound good man.

Steven Wilson is definitely not someone I could sing along with.

Thanks :) Glad it sounds ok.

Honestly I struggle with the singing though and always have this tendency to go for songs with that kind of voice. Like Riverside or even another one I try to pull of is Rush - Tears, but hell that voice is too high for me. Hehe :o

Not sure I've seen this thread before, but then again, I've been kinda lowkey of late.

Anyway, went into studio as I wanted to lay some of my tracks down which have been coming on for 10 or more years.

Used a little studio in Kalk Bay, which suited me just fine, White Horse Studios. Good setup and great sound engineers.

Was a helluva learning curve for me. Being my first time in studio; having to play to click tracks and the whole experience was awesome.

I thought I'd walk in with my friends and lay 4 tracks down in a day. Took us 6 hours to get one track down.

I'd appreciate any feedback, this is the first rough mix of that day. Only the 2nd verse and chorus as the 1st verse's vocals have to be done again.

So I'm looking at going away for a few days next month to write some songs and record my own demos in a homey kind of environment on a budget.

I'll be taking along my semi accoustic, a friend's electric and amp, a keyboard and two mic's and stands. Just really rough demos I wanna record.

I've got Adobe Audition 3, which I've used before to do multi track recordings with in my room, using a headset mic.

But I want a way of getting the audio from the mic's to the laptop. Is there a converter of sorts with which I can get the bigger amp/mic jacks down to a 3.5mm into the mic jack on the laptop? Or would I need a laptop with a decent sound card? Or what hardware would I require?

This is not for the sake of getting anything professional down, just for my own use and amusement. But will still hopefully still have some kind of sensebility to it.

Thanks.

So feedback from a local artist is that I'd need a laptop with soundcard and firewire.

Thoughts?

Please excuse my fanboism here, but **** that adobe rubbish, and get yourself a real DAW, in fact it's the DAW of DAWs:

http://reaper.fm/

You don't need to get yourself a firewire card, in fact this is a bad idea, as many laptop chipsets have issues in that regard.

You have two choices here really, the first and best is to get a USB2 interface with two mic preamps, but that's going to cost you at least 1.5K.

The other option is to get yourself a small mixer of some sort (I have a Behringer Xenyx 802 here), which has a couple of mic inputs, and then you can send the main outs straight into your laptop line in.

The only issue here, is if you want to go directly in with any instruments, in which case you will need a DI box as well.

LoL @ fanboism :D

Thanks for the feedback - going to be looking into it.
And no, don't want to go directly into the laptop - still wanna try and control levels - so a mixer would be required - DJ friend should hopefully be able to help.

Thanks again copa - if you've got anything else - please let me know.

As for the mixer, the Behringer XENYX 802.

My friend has something similar to it

But I couldn't get the mains out into the laptop cos of the size of the lead.
Is there a converter or sorts?
Oh snap = the USB2 interface with two mic preamps you spoke of! :o

Have you got a link to what kind of hardware I'm looking at for that please?

Something like this?

Yep, that is just what I am talking about.

You will get a way better result, with the simplest of USB interfaces, compared to using a mixer to go into your soundcard, although that can work certainly.

If you are going to go as far as purchasing an interface, make sure it has a direct input, which means you can plug a guitar or bass straight into the device, which is great, as you can then add modelling to the dry signal after you've recorded it, rather than being stuck with the initial amp tone you might use.

With regards to connecting the mixer to the soundcard, you would need to get a cable that has a small stereo jack on one end (goes into computer line in) and on the other end you would need two mono big TS connectors, which would output from your mixer.

Easiest is to go to a music shop, tell them what you want to do, and they will have everything at hand, I'd imagine.

Looking around, this:

Looks like a damned nice deal.

*edit*

Nevermind, terrible reviews for that soundcard. It seems a case of you get what you pay for.

Cheers - will pop around to some music stores in my area as well yeah and have a chat with the guys.

Dj'ing sure.

My setup:
392883_10150476216231388_654766387_10277909_340928346_n.jpg

Yeah thats a Xone 4d... and the simple 2 channel Numark mixdeck. I add and test other midi controllers for live sets as well but this is what I mainly use.

Getting into production now. Making some Minimal tech house, drum and bass and dubsteppy stuff. Nothing good up on sound cloud or wherever yet but still learning and going through all the methods.

Aps.
Ableton live is my DAW and dj workstation but i like a lot of the synths and stuff from Native instraments. Also FL studio 10 as a VST plagin in Live cuase imageline built some crazy instraments (Sytrus, Sakura, the Drumaxx, and just the simple 3xOSC for those old school squares...)

I like experimenting with sounds so nothing is ever a audio wave in these sets unless it was recorded off an actual Analog setup. Gonna buy my first anlog device called a Mopho pretty cool to mess around with.

So I decided to try DJ'ing again...still have trouble with the setup. I use to use Traktor but it's changed so much VDJ seems more user friendly.
Tried to my last mix yesterday:
http://www.mediafire.com/?fao0b9ec70r9xlf

It's a hip-hop mix, has it's moments but I still need a lot work especially with timing. Seems like a lost my touch after not doing this for 4-5 years
