Must I get this TV from Canada

This looks like a killer deal works out to around R6 400
I am going to Canada for a holiday- We are allowed R3 000 duty free allowance per passenger which can be grouped together for a family-we are 4 so that's R12 000. We are not intending to do any other shopping so this will fall under the allowance hence no duty.
What I want to know is would u guys buy it if u could? I know the warranty won't work here but this is a HUGE saving for a smilar product in SA.
Any advice would be appreciated.
 
And the shipping?

Don't even think about it if you want decent quality SD TV and sport.

You can have a massive 46" TV as luggage? Not sure how that works, and surely customs will nail you if they find out.

R21,000 is a bit steep, should be around R18,000 - still expensive though.

It's an entry level 60Hz (no-no for sport) LED-backlit LCD. For that kind of money you could get a mid range LCD like Samsung 6 Series with much better SD TV quality and sport capability (100+Hz). Even better yet, you could get an even bigger plasma if you specifically want good quality SD TV and sport - 50" HD plasma for R8000ish.

You're shooting yourself in the foot if your TV ever breaks and you need warranty support which can only be had in Canada.

Are you sure you can do that? Pretty sure customs is going to nail you...

Guess you can take it out of the box, hook up DSTV mobile and say its a carry TV
 
That's what Air Canada told me - will try to get it in writing. Why would customes nail me if its under the allowance- I will declare it. Will have proof of payment of R 6500- allowed R12 000.
SARS website doesn't state any exclusions like electornics for the duty free allowance.

It's the Samsung 6 Series like I mentioned - very good TVs, at quite a pretty penny.

But to advise you correctly, it really all depends on what you intend using the TV for, what sources you will be displaying, etc.?
 
Apparently TV's from North America wont work here ex: You can play XBOX/PS, watch DVD,s and so on. But because of the whole PAL/NTSC thing you wont be able to watch normal TV. Just from what i heard

Samsung PS50C430 50" HD plasma @ R8000ish in South Africa. Look no further, trust me. :)

Please go into the shop and compare it at said sport/movies to similarly priced LCDs, as well as mid range LCDs like the 6 Series.

You'll be pleasantly surprised how for half the price you're getting the bigger size and superior/equal picture quality vs. the Samsung 6 Series LCDs at double the price.

In fact the PS50C430 will most likely cream the better LCD at sport. Not to mention the plasma will be much better for SD content like non-HD movie/series rips, etc. Don't worry, HD will blow your mind, too.

got myself a samsung full HD 32 inch tv a couple of years ago and have never looked back... samsung are a great brand and are reasonably priced for the quality you get.
 
after reading the posts- I'm leaning towards not buying it from their- may be too much hassle

Good choice. I'm even scared of buying small tech components from overseas. The shipping charges to send back faulty products are going to hurt.

Rather buy local through local import channels where you can make full use of the warranty and after-sales service.

You will be liable for +/-R3300 customs charges if you import that TV.
