Are you guys testing mvix's?

There are so many brands out there, I'm kinda lost with all the options
 
No I am done with MVIX, tested them until the cows came home, they are good, but the pricing is out. They are expensive and they dont offer many units that play MKV/H264 video at a reasonable price.

The issue is the chipset, it is old technology.
We are testing a brand that is not in SA yet. ;)
 
I will, I will let you guys know within a week, just testing the MKV player.
The cheaper one is awesome, very nice interface.

But when you have 1TB of MKV files, you sort of need a MKV player :D

Ok so it is going to be a toss up between the Xtreamer and the PCH C-200, think I will wait for the reviews to come out ;)
 
WDTV - Plays MKV @ 1080p, divx/xvid etc etc. Can plug in a USB/HDD/Wireless (see http://www.wdtvforums.com/ or www.wdtvforum.com)

Very moddable. WD actually listens and releases updates fairly often. If you know the limitations of the box and encode accordingly (# reframes allowed/audio/23.975Hz etc etc) then it is great value for money (R1200 a few months ago. The Mvix 780HD is R2100 ish w/o HDD).

Looks great on my Philips 42".
 
Do they not fall under heading 85.17 sub heading 8517.6 on page 938 of Schedule 1 this link http://www.sars.gov.za/Tools/Documents/DocumentDownload.asp?FileID=48283

"Other apparatus for transmission or reception of voice, images or other data, including apparatus for communication in a wired or wireless network (such as a local or wide area network)"

for which the general duty is 10% (if shipped from outside EU, EFTA or SADC [for example China]) + VAT.

Actually I now see that tariff number 8517.62.90 is free under the SARS Customs & Excise Tariff Schedule 1 / Part 1 (on page 938), of course VAT would still be charged :(

For anybody contemplating a WDTV I think the http://www.xtreamer.net/ would be a better choice for around the same money, ok maybe a few hundred Rand more.

For anybody who has a bigger budget and requires more features and greater hardware flexibility I think the new Popcorn Hour C-200 will be the business.

Of course neither of these unit have been properly reviewed yet so would would wait for those to come out before pushing the button on either.

Also very keen to find out as to what marine1 has up his sleeve as I am itching to buy a digital media player/streamer ASAP.

If I decide to order something from overseas maybe I will get lucky, maybe Customs in CPT never got the memo yet ;)
So just to clarify it would be 28% then VAT on top of that, so about 42% altogether :eek:

Please show us, we understand it's not final and you are still testing etc.
No one is going to hold you to it but would be great the know what may be available.
