I read that MWEB is not going to release details of it's 10 mbps offerings till september. My ADSL line is with Telkom and MWEB are my Internet service provider (4mbps uncapped). My modem says my exchange has been upgraded to 10 mbps, but I cannot link to it at anything over 4mbps. Is this because MWEB are not supporting that speed yet?

There was a report that they would offer a 10mbps solution in late September

your only going to get 10MB when Mweb launch it and prepare to pay more for 10MB.... so if you don't want to pay more, get telkom to drop your line back to 4MB or leave Mweb to limit you to 4Mb only. But if telkom start charging for 10Mb also... then you might want to drop it to 4Mb if your ISP is not giving you 10MB

so if I understand this correctly, the 4mbps service will remain and there will also be a 10 mbps service. At the moment, there are 3 line speeds, fast, faster and fastest. Any guesses as to what they will be renamed???

No, the 4 mbps is being converted into the 10 mbps service. It will still be "Fastest" and it will be "up to 10 mbps"

if your line is stable then leave it as it is

as for the MWEB account MWEB stated that they will release 10meg accounts once their upgrade with Telkom is done

so you will be able to get it but it will cost more

if there are still going to be 3 speeds, and the fast and faster speeds as far as I know have remained unchanged, that means we have 314kbps, 512kbps and 10mbps. If someone is unable to afford the 10mbps or if their line does not support / allow the fastest service, surely that person will be bumped back to the faster service and not 4mbps as that will no longer exist?

As I understand it works as follows:

THe fastest service will be 1 meg guaranteed and up to 10 Meg. so you can fall anywhere in that zone and pay the same

But Mweb may have uncapped speeds at various intervals at different prices. e.g 6 meg will cost X. and 8 Meg will cost y, but the same telkom rental will be paid for those speeds.

Sounds like a smart method, if only other ISP/srvice providers would let you pay for what you get!
instead of paying for 4MB and getting 1MB, you should then only have to pay for 1Mb and like mweb, you should be able to buy the account that supports your speeds eg. if you got an 8mb line you only have to buy a 8mb account...
