Hi Guys

Currently I am with MWeb on the 1Mbps data only uncapped ADSL. I am not a big downloader at all, highest usage I have had 20GB for a month. Average is probably 10GB to 15GB. I am looking at upgrading to the 4Mbps uncapped ADSL (not the premium account).

Main reason being I work a lot from home so the faster speed will be a major bonus, but I don't fully understand the throttling and shaping statements from MWeb. Anyone had experience with this?

I 'upgraded' to the 2 Mbps uncapped. Was throttled after 2 days to 192 kbps. Downloaded less than 5 GB.

Well that's worrying. In that case it's better to stay on the 1Mbps line.

Heard so many problems with MWeb when going to the higher lines. IMO they're not worth having an account with :D

I say upgrade to 2meg, but the premium account. not the cheapy one.

But the proper 2meg account has no throttling. You get what you pay for.

Only I didn't even get what I paid for. Unless your definition of excessive downloading is stuck in 1993.

These new packages from Mweb are nothing more than honey traps.

Looking at Afrihost, their prices are significantly cheaper (a 10Mbps bundle from Afrihost is effectively the same price as the 4Mbps bundle from MWeb). With Afrihost, you are not throttled, you are shaped and MWeb's speeds are effectively the same as Afrihost's for the same packages (hearsay).

It does have some pretty heavy shaping tho. Maximum rate I can get streaming video from any site with a 2Mb line is 100kB/s. The technical support confirmed that it was probably shaping. This is new since the release of their cheapy accounts, as far as I can tell. Definitely going to move to another provider asap.
