Has any one moved away from the standard "Big time surfer Uncapped ADSL" that goes for R219 p/m

and are now using "Internet addict Uncapped, unshaped" that goes for R499 p/m to MWEB

or have you gone for the Business ADSL: Uncapped with the following snag:

Uncapped, unshaped, 24/7 support, business class router (compulsory) and additional value added services.
*Subject to signing a 12 or 24 month contract. Setup fee from R900.

How is the "internet addict" during office hours?

Is it worth the couple of hundred extra ?

Had Mweb 384 ADSL: Uncapped, unshaped, up until now
Its not bad but the latency ain't impressive as I enjoy online gaming

Called Mweb to switch me to 4Mbs
Minutes later I was cruising awesome speeds and the latency has improved

I suggest you upgrade your line speed and get a 4Mbs account

Hi abubolt,

I can not afford 4 MB at the moment.

But if I have to pay the extra R280.00 rand, I would like to know that I'm not wasting it on the addict or business package.

And as for the 12 month lock in and equipment (compulsory) on the business ADSL would really have to be worth it.

I'm on the 384k uncapped unshaped and haven't a complaint yet (well besides the price, but compared to the days I was paying this for sentech 128k uncapped eons ago......it's vaguely a bargain).

Latency has been great on whatever I've tested it on (Guild Wars was a little iffy for about 5 days but has mostly stabilized to 300-400ms again) and speeds through HTTP/HTTPS are flawless (it's the only means I use to download).

Testing other forms of downloading is a bit of a pain but I wouldn't mind simply pinging any specific address for you and posting my results.

(And because Mweb's network seems to be divided in both location and quality I thought I'd mention I'm in JHB)

Hi Basjohn,

Thanks for the info. :)

I would have like to know how your line runs during office hours with eMule or a well seeded torrent....(But I know that your not keen on doing that )

I find playing Guild Wars I have to move over to the cybersmart account for it to be a worth while experience.

Most of the time the R220.00 Mweb is used for pulling TV series and movies.

I just want to get back from work and downloads should be showing progress after nine hours.

I find they are taking far longer than normal lately and hover round the 3 KB range all day. HTTP downloads fly like hell at 35 /36 KB

So the crux of the matter is, will they shape me during office hours to the same point as I am currently if I get the " Internet addict Uncapped, unshaped" that goes for R499 p/m to MWEB " ????

i might be interested too.what speeds does he get using normal http downloads and torrents during day and night respectively on the uncapped unshape account. how is the streaming also

As far as I can tell the connection is entirely the same at any time of day.

I did fiddle with a torrent for a bit got about 25kBs but I only tried for about 3 minutes and from what I remember back when I used torrents they usually take a while to pick up to full speed.

Maybe you should pm Mweb Operations about the specifics? From what he's told me there should be NO shaping on this account (and it sure feels like there isn't any going on to me) and no fears of downloading beyond some vague limit. (That is: You cannot be considered abusive no matter how much you download on the unshaped account)

[Edit] Http is full speed all day and all night, I actually rate limit myself to 32kBs to prevent myself from causing website timeouts but with the limiter off it's usually 35-39kBs. However, streaming has always been iffy for me on any ISP with 384.......I usually flashgot the file and watch it later instead [/Edit]

Morning Basjohn,

From what you have posted it looks like I will upgrade my account at the end of the month.

I appreciate your feed back and input !

Had a great day.

I'm in heaven !

Downloads running at 20 / 25 during the day.

First time in a long time.

The answer was to just get the "Internet addict
Uncapped, unshaped " best money I could have spent.

One short chat on the phone to lady at Mweb and bingo !

I have the internet like it should be

This is exactly the thread I was looking for. I am currently with afrihost, and since July when they changed their shaping policy, my connection has been shaped to ****. i can hardly manage 5kb/s during the day and in the evening it hovers around 15kb/s. It is really frustrating. WHen I first got it in march, IT was flying, sometimes got 50kb/s. My skyping is horrible and i have to start a youtube video and press pause and come back some time later to watch it. It is pointless at the moment. Just browsing the internet is slow. Only on weekends does it come close to normal, where it maxes out at 33kb/s. That is when I realise how internet should be on 384, because the internet feels blazingly fast!!. I am now tired. So I read a lot and i am even more confused, there is openweb, axxes, mweb, and many other ISP's to choose from. So I thought lets try mweb. Then I saw they have this new 384 uncapped unshaped acount for 499pm and as the op asked, is it worth it. Becuase to me i think it is worth the extra cash to have top speed all the time. I am tired of this slow crappy internet. there is no point it is uncapped, becuase even so i will only be able to use about 1gb the whole month.

Cosmic_Nomad, it seems you have answered my question. I also want to know, if I sign up now, will I only be charged for half the month? also I wonder if the account will be degraded as MWEB learns your internet needs?

EDiT: even late at night around 11pm, when I do a speedtest my download speed is lower than my upload speed. Only time that changes is on a weekend.

Glad to see someone else enjoying the account then! R499 is quite steep but for those of us who can't afford the MASSIVE difference in line rental to move to 4mb it's still cheaper than the only solid alternative I know of.

Mweb do charge pro-rata. I can confirm this as I signed up for this account on the last 5 days of last month when I couldn't take my previous ISP shaping everything to hell anymore. I think it's roughly R16 a day but that's from memory of fiddling with windows calculator so don't place your bets on that exact price.

@ The Philosopher just what Basjohn said in that Mweb do charge pro-rata.

My emule is on fire again since last night and in the "Down-load the whole of the internet mode" =)

I must say its worth the extra.

i am currently on mweb uncapped R219.
384 line, and since last week have been experiencing issues with the news server downloads,
can anyone confirm if uncapped unshaped is experiencing the same issues? as even offpeak i am getting slow as hell speed.
and this was never the case - i used to average abt 2+ gigs a day and 3+ on weekends.
now i am getting less than half that on the same days
