Hi Guys

I Have recently signed up with MWEB for their 4MB uncapped which seems like good value for money. I Just have a few questions about it.

1) For the moment I am only getting up to about 220kb/s max off P2P, day or night. I Am using it at my office till Wednesday and will see if I get the same result when my line at home is installed on Wednesday. I Am supposed to get roughly 400 - 420kb/s instead of a maximum of 220kb/s right ?

2) Does MWEB throttle your account if you download via P2P often ? No thread I can find accurately gives an answer to this. They aren't really allowed to throttle you anyway are they ?

3) What would be a safe amount of data to use on downloads with this account every month without getting a warning ? Some say 300GB is fine others say 400GB is fine. I Would like to avoid getting a warning from MWEB about my usage. As much as I would love an unshaped account I simply cannot afford that.

4) Is there shaping on weekends ?

All help would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Regards
Lawrence

Hi Guys

It's variable, but I often get close enough to max overnight.

2) Does MWEB throttle your account if you download via P2P often ? No thread I can find accurately gives an answer to this. They aren't really allowed to throttle you anyway are they ?

No.

3) What would be a safe amount of data to use on downloads with this account every month without getting a warning ? Some say 300GB is fine others say 400GB is fine. Don't bypass the shaping, and download literally 24/7 the entire month, and you should be fine.

4) Is there shaping on weekends ?

Yes, but generally less.

Thanks for the reply copacetic :)

So if I download about 300GB a month and keep it in that area would that be fine ? 300GB of usage a month seems fair to me.

Also, now that you mention bypassing shaping, I know people use seedboxes for those. So if I for example had to use a seedbox service, but not via shaping times, only overnight, would that be allowed ? I Would not then be bypassing their shaping. I'd just be downloading P2P with low seeders faster if I grab it through FTP like that which is not a violation right ? :)

That would be bypassing the shaping, I think.

There is no number you are going to get from anyone, per month.

The main issues, as afar as I understand, are not saturating your line 24/7, basically.

I get more stuff that I could ever watch, so I am happy. Would avoid seedboxes if I were you though, as that is very much against the AUP.

This is where I am so far:

I Would rather avoid the seedboxes then. It would be convenient though as it would be much faster. But I don't want a warning from MWEB so I'll stay away from there. But I honestly don't understand how a seedbox can be against the AUP, but you can download a game on steam that is 26GB, like Max Payne 3 for example. Steam uses 100% of your connection, even through the day because that connection to Steam is not shaped. It's an arguement with no sense LOL.

I Have alot of games on steam that I digitally purchased and have not installed yet. Will MWEB give me a hassle if I buy and install too much digital Steam games ?

I'd be pissed if they did take issue with it, and I would most certainly not expect them to.

What I mostly do with digital purchases is I buy them and then I just get the files from someone else and copy them into the directory they should go in and I let Steam use those files to install and add which ever files it has to like DLC's and updates etc just to skip the hassle of downloading all of those files. I Was using 3G up until now and went for the ADSL because I can simply not game online with my 3G after I moved.

Does MWEB have a problem with uploading/seeding data ? (If this question is inappropriate an admin member can edit or remove this)

Also, should I later upgrade to the 10MB uncapped account, does that mean I can download more data or do I just get higher speed ? I Will defenitely upgrade at a later stage

Thats the issue, no one really knows with MWEB... for six months your pattern is fine, and then suddenly its not.

I am under the impression that MWEB has been crystal clear on the fact that if you bypass the shaping, if they pick it up they will nail you. Seems clear enough to me. Just because they let you get away with it for a while doesn't mean they aren't being clear.

I've had no issues at all, and I download more Linux Isos than I could ever hope to install, so I am happy, personally.

:erm: they didn't let me get away with it, I left because the speeds were pathetic.

...and if its so crystal clear, why weren't you sure on your answer whether seedboxes are bypassing shaping or not?

Ps. how do you watch Linux ISO's?

I didn't mean you personally, I've no idea what you relationship or experiences with MWEB have been.

It is clear, as far as I am aware. I'm not entirely sure what a seedbox is, which is why I was hedging, I think. If it enables you to obtain traffic that would normally be shaped in an unshaped fashion then it's definitely a no-go.

Well because a seedbox bypasses shaping. But you are only being shaped through office hours, so technically using a seedbox outside of office hours should be allowed. There is many ways to do that and they should not be allowed to complain about that, like by making small rar files on your seedbox of whatever you want there and grab them in small parts. MWEB Guy, please respond to this one :D

Shaping is applied at all hours, just not as dramatically during the night (which begs the question of why you would need to go this route then, in any case).

I'm not entirely sure what a seedbox is

A Seedbox is a FTP/HTTP server. For example, you rent an online server for x amount a month. You log in to that server and you download P2P to that server. Those are usually 1GB/S servers, so it's very fast. I Am not going to mention some of those hosts here because I might get some trouble. But anycase you download on that server and when it's finished, you log in to that server again and you download it from there via FTP/HTTP at full speed, thus not being shaped because it's not P2P anymore

Yes, thought so.

This will get you into ****, I can almost guarantee it.

Torrents are good at night in any case, so what is the use of this?

The only nice thing is it saves you time due to it being so much faster. It's a little more effort though. But I have enough patience anyway so I would not need the use of a seedbox. It was just a question out of curiosity :p

Why not take this opportunity to setup SABnzbd and use the MWEB news server?

You could use GrabIt, but SABnzbd is really the way to go because of it integrating with other useful things like Android and iOS apps, Sick Beard and CouchPotato and you will get full line speed 90% of the time.
