Hi,

I got the mweb uncapped, unshaped 512k line about 2 days ago. Im really disappointed in the speed which downloads at around 40kb/s. I get the same speed on a torrent or http download.

The torrent file has enough seeders and the speed should be way faster in my opinion. I'm paying R1000+ a month for the service.

I called mweb several times and tried all sorts of things like changing the realms etc but no improvement in speed. One theory is that mweb is still running on backup links but their site says they are operating at 100% capacity ????

What speed should I be getting on this 512k unshaped, uncapped account?

thanks for the reply. I plan to do just that. Just for my sanity can anyone tell me what is the speeds I should be getting on a 512k. I know that it isnt set in stone but a range would be helpful!

If you are getting 40kbps on all downloads on a 512kbps unshaped line, then clearly something is wrong. Contact one of the MWeb reps here or Telkom to have the line checked. Check the SNR value in your router. I can't say if the alternate bandwidth MWeb has secured until SEACOM is repaired is responsible though.

Apparently my snr was 12db or something. The guy from mweb checked and told me it was good. I'm hoping its just the alternative bandwidth being slow. Damn if only vodacom would make their 3G data bundle prices cheaper!

Well 55KB is about the limit for 512Kb line throughput
There is a big difference between KB(kilo bytes) and Kb(kilo bits)
For instance a 64Kb ISDN will give you about 6.4KB download max

There is 8Kb for 1KB and then you have to look at overheads on the line to keep it up
So you get +-80% throughput after overheads
So 512Kb/s line gives 64KB/s
80% of that is 51.2KB/s

it means you will get about 180MB per hour
so that about 4.2GB per day
so about 117GB a month

at R1000 you get that and better international latency and more secure connection
and it includes line rental
not international pricing by a mile but not bad at all

if your looking for 100% pure rand value versus download amount then you may be better off with shaped account

when seacom is up I get over 60GB per month on my 384kb shaped account using torrents
and torrent's is one of the things that is heavily shaped

okay, understood

last night I did a speed test and it popped all the way up to 0.86mps (or whatever scale they use on that speedtest site)

Last night my torrent download ,which had plenty of seeders, hovered around 45 kbs on utorrent.
My question is, once seacom is up can I expect torrents any faster than what I'm getting now? HOw does seacom affect my package? Sorry for such a noob question.

Why do you have 512 meg?

Geez it is only like 100 bucks or something cheaper than 4 meg. Get 4 meg uncapped from mweb for 899 :D. Will cost you less and you should be able to pull more gb's in a month

Go open web gold 4meg if you want performance for a good price.

um, dont they shape the crap out of torrents on that connection?

40kb/s is a line speed of 384kb , i am currently on mweb 512k uncapped and manages 48 to 52kb/s constantly whether HTTP or torrent given or taken a few K's

i suggest you contact support.

Firstly Mweb handles HTTP downloads in a different way to P2P (torrents). Their system recognises the port in use and the shaper de-prioritises anything that isn't HTTP/browsing. Games, torrents, video streaming and Skype are included in that list. A speed test will only show HTTP. In all honesty, 45kb.s is quite good for Mweb torrents.

you should get about 50KB when seacom is back up
but let the MWEB guys check your router to make sure it is getting 512Kb sync since 40Kb is about what you would get on 384Kb

as for downloads on 4096 shaped account VS 512Kb unshaped
you will get more data down from shaped 4096
most of the guys have been averaging 200GB+
but download speed during the day will be slow (most guys have been getting about 40KB/s - 50KB/s) after say 10 at night it becomes fast
(200KB/s +)

however international latency should be slightly better on 512Kb unshaped line
so if you play international games where there is not local server you might get slightly better performance from the unshaped package

although I'm on shaped package and international to Lord of the rings online I average 300ms which is good (when Seacom is up)
at the moment my line average 350 - 400 ms to LOTRO
which is still not bad

Thanks for stating the obvious, was that the intention?
What would be the case of speed/performance difference and volume downloads be between

4096 Shaped/ Uncapped
and
512 Unshaped/Uncapped
