Mweb Abuse Notification

I would like Mweb to highlight in the AUP as linked above with no changes in exactly where it states the limits according to uncapped data and how much capped data we may utilise daily within the uncapped agreement. I would also like to see the legal banning or abuse notification reasoning in regard to exceed your uncapped limit. Yes, there need to be fair usage for all users to guarantee user experience satisfaction, but then the product is not uncapped as advertised; it is rather a limited daily data plan for which you pay a fixed monthly fee.

I sorta agree with MWEB on this, 1TB is crazy usage, and is not fair because it supersedes the average usage on that product by at least 6-8x

Not everyone is average. If it's not uncapped don't advertise it as such.

Or if you are going to advertise falsely, at least give some firm numbers like the other ISP's do. They lie but at least they make it clear they're lying.

Bloody hell, I'd like to know how many "linux distros" are you guys downloading per month?!

I average about 200gigs a month and I download a fair bit.

Ok, so just got a Mweb Abuse Notification number 2 which reads as follows: Your current ADSL usage pattern shows repeated instances of continuous bulk downloads over prolonged periods. My laptop is on 24/7 and downloading, after the first warning I set a limit on my download speed to half the speed (still 24/7) which clearly did not help. I now want to set up a scheduler so that it will only download as follows: From 17:00 - 22:00 at half speed and from 22:00 to 07:00 at full speed and then stop it between 07:00 and 17:00. Will the be acceptable for MWEB?

If your ideal usage is 24/7 downloading then you aren't on the right account. Mweb no longer has the 'Internet Addict' option, but they have business uncapped, and other ISP's have uncapped home options more suited to heavy downloading.

That page is a joke. Ain't nobody got time for that.

MWeb are a good ISP but the way they implement their FUP is bull****.

I got banned because of these notices and told it is a lifetime ban (linked to number).

I have a house with 3 kids (2 teenagers). They all love YouTube. Whole reason I went uncapped. It became a pain to monitor the whole house.
So kids + me with my downloads resulted in an eventual ban.

Don't bother asking them for the patterns of your download behaviour when you get your warnings. They can't (or won't) tell you. I tried so I knew what to look for and try correct. Short of kicking everyone off the net I had no clue.

So got banned and now with OpenWeb. These guys show you what uncapped is supposed to be like.

My household downloads a lot and we've never had a problem.

About 1TB a month on 4Mbps line. Well that is what earned me my lifetime ban ;) also tried replying to those warning emails, and adjusted my patterns as per OP. they kept saying we don't care how much you use it when you use, but stop abusing it!? Useless, been with afrihost since and haven't had any of the issues that plague other forumites here.

Please. 1TB is hugely excessive. My household has two parents and three kids (youngest is 16), and the kids consume bandwidth like crazy (on Mweb's 4Mbps uncapped account). The home network has over 10TB of stuff stored. I think the most we've ever done in a month is a bit over 500GB. If you download overnight every night, it constitutes about 300GB of the month's usage. So 1TB is a gross violation of any fair use policy.

I am now apparently on my second warning. Proud of it, though I don't really know how I did it.

I'm apparently on their 1mb 'uncapped' service.

Some points:

I'd seen the warning text posted before & it is deliberately vague & astonishingly rude.

I'll save my response for now.

The first part about 'inhibiting the Internet/network' is unenforceable hokum. It seems to talk about everyone on the internet & then revert back to their network. It boils down to this: my contract is with MWEB -not with any/all of their client base. I'm not accountable for any other user's experience on MWEB. If MWEB is oversubscribed (as they apparently are) then they need to increase their capacity -it's that simple. There was good post about this on Reddit a few weeks back, I'll try to dig it up.

My line is incredibly unstable & has been for as long as I've been with MWEB. My line syncs unpredictably at anything from 128k -1.5mb & frequently won't sync at all . Both MWEB & Telkom are aware of this.

Due to my unstable line, I grab what I can, when I can, due to not knowing what my service will be like for the next hour/day/week/month.

My 2nd warning (which I assume covers the weeks following my 1st warning) actually includes a period where I was on a trial with Openweb. The trial was only supposed to last 48 hours, but it worked (really well) for almost a full week over the new year. So I guess that means that MWEB aren't taking your total monthly/weekly usage into account (maybe as an initial trigger?) but rather over some other arbitrary period which they aren't willing to disclose. My take on this is that it is still a data cap -whether you measure it over hours/days/weeks; it's still a cap, & that's not uncapped.

Now it's time: MWEB are still (calming down) charging me *clenching fist* R488/month for 1mb? A lady from MWEB even called me back in Sep/Oct, after a billing error & told me that I would be moved to their R339 package ASAP, yet nothing has happened & they have been taking on new customers at the lower rate for months now. Professional piss-takers of the highest order.

I have more, but this is all for now.

+1 i am also billed R488 for a 1 mb UC AIC Service which is supposed to be R339
Also as i understand it i was paying for 512 line, but then the upgrades hit ...
384 > 1 Mbps
512 > 2 Mbps
Yet my Telkom line jumped from 384 - 1 meg, where i was supposed to be on Telkom 512 with Mweb 512 UC AIC
Then with upgrades i would have been presented with a choice to move down 1 meg or up to 2 meg...

Thanks for the valuable info. So maybe time to say after so many years "Freck Mweb" and go to someone like OpenWeb then. The Mweb speed and reliability is up to sheet street anyway nowadays. Akin to their last big "upgrade" in their Europe link. Oh yeah, this is fact " MWEB is oversubscribed"

Mweb banning me was the best thing to happen to me in my little Internet world.
OpenWeb are way superior.

Mweb still offer me the best ping for gaming, and I've never had any kind of warnings of any kind. But then again, I don't actually max out my line 24/7 trying to download just because I can.

The thing is this: I work part time and have some freelance work on the side. I do a lot of things for fun like going out/going to the movies/playing video games, and I still don't have as much time as I would like. How do you people find the time to "consume" all the stuff you download? Seriously!

Move to Telkom, no shapping, no BS AUP.

So you've decided 200gb is an ok limit, and everyone should comply?

I'm on 1 Meg uncapped and I'm hitting 80-90 gigs presently and I feel like I'm abusing their service. Feel terrible :(

No warning letters though :)

Then the propaganda/scare tactics are working.

Not really, I just feel as though I'm being excessive, not mweb. On the contrary I couldn't be happier with them.

I've done 160gb so far this month, you really shouldnt feel bad at all.

The only thing wrong with MWEB is the cost of the 2MB AIC, they need to get inline with other ISP's. Telkom 2MB AIC, from 1 Feb, will be a whole R140 cheaper....
So much for wanting to makethe internet more affordable.....

You misunderstand, I don't mean something is wrong with the service. The point is you're feeling guilty about using something that you paid for. Meaning their tactics are working.

Hi Am on my first warning
Was doing 400Gb in Nov and Dec i knew i will get a letter :( this on 2Mbps account
It arrived in middle of Jan
Asked Abuse if warning falls away and the reply was 3 months
Would love to have a clearer explanation of definition of thier "Prolonged Sessions"

No need to adjust your lifestyle. You love and went uncapped for that reason and they reward you with warning for breach of acceptable use policy. Lose there is a lot of ISPs out there. This is money you are paying and its not butter trade.

If you download more than 450gb on a 4mbps line you will get a warning. I have now moved to open web gold and have had zero issues. Mweb isn't really uncapped.
