In the Sunday Times today, there is an ad [by MWEB] that says you can have ADSL for R145/month [only the ISP-portion of course] but you must sign a 12-month contract and have a modem [an additional R99-month].

Interestingly, these prices are valid only from 1st November.

What does this provide?

What do you mean by that?. It doesn't mention that it has to be a certain speed/cap and you get 300min "free" at Mweb Hotspots.

1Gig, hardcap, buy extra Gigs as you go, any line speed (I think?)

Basically an upsell offer for the dialup users ... who happen to pay R145 currently.

right at the bottom of the ad there's a small print that says 'term and conditions apply'

EXTREMELY misleading ad IMO : 'surf all you want' - yeah right, surf all you want ........ 2 days later: ooops, you can't surf no more, sorry dude

The offer is probably targeting the average 'joe public' home dialup user, for whom 1 Gig is plenty.

Thats why its in the Sunday Times and not a banner ad on myADSL.

this is good actually

a lot of ppl will see the advert and a lot of them will consider getting adsl after a month or so joe public will know more about the internet and the myadsl force will grow :P

More people with ADSL, means maybe we can get another drop in adsl prices... Still i bet the poor "Joes" out there at don't know anything will get a shock when they have to pay an extra 270 - 680 rand just to have adsl. Ads are so missleading.

Well if their call costs on dialup are over R270 for the month, then getting an ADSL192 makes financial sense.

BIG wow... all mweb users get this already - even dial-up users as far as i know!!

if only there was a way fo us to tell them to stay away! The average joe must be a retard to get adsl and just get your mail which is really small and then really think about goin browsing maybe at their favourite news site.

If thats all they know or want to do, then why are they retards?

There are also a lot of poor ppl that will see this as a chance to get mweb and "improve" their kids education (like the advert says ) :P

The good thing is the more ppl that get adsl the more ppl will get educated about the state of broadband in sa and what telkom is doing to sa

I dunno, I see this in the same context as the casino.. atm the chances of the Consumers getting more out of telecoms than the provider is pretty much similar to casinos.

Poor people spending cash on telecoms in SA is bad, same as the poor people I see spending their hard earned cash at casinos for f%^$#&k knows what reason :/

The problem here, lack of education is still the root of all evil in SA, poor people wouldnt spend their hard earned cash at casinos and wouldnt spend it on overpriced telecoms.
