Does anyone else experience constant line drops on MWEB uncapped?

I have a 4mb line and I can't stay on for longer than maximum of 5 minutes then my connection drops.

Connection drops on mweb has been happening for a while, but last week has been especially bad - used to be one or 2 line drops in an hour, now it is 1 drop every 2 or 5 minutes!

Afrihost acct. is fine, no drops there?

When logged in with your MWeb credentials the ADSL loses sync every few minutes, but when you are logged in with your Afrihost account the ADSL remains synced?

got the same problem. none with vodacom or axxess. reported my line 4x in the past month to telkom. still the same. anything for 4 to 10 disconnects per day. telkom blame mweb.

Its probably your line...not necessarily MWEB. Probably best to get Telkom to drop you a notch lower and see if you have any sync problems then.

Hi theCarlo

Please PM me your MWEB account details and I will investigate this on our side.

Is this due to sync drops (i.e. you lose sync with the DSLAM), or PPPoE disconnects? There is no way MWEB can cause your sync to the DSLAM to drop constantly. Telkom is in complete and full control of this portion of the link. If it's a PPPoE disconnect it may be a Telkom issue (ESR disconnecting you), or a MWEB issue (PPPoE RADIUS issues).

And now in nongeek english please ? :) :)

The DSL link LED on the router flashes .. i.e. sync drop (dlsam thingi). I know it sounds fishy but TRUE STORY

Sounds impossible, since ALL the equipment from your phone jack through the line, DSLAM, the backhaul and the ESR are all owned and operated by Telkom. I'd take this up with MWEB support, to be honest, if your line is with them. Otherwise give Telkom a call, the DSLAM keeps its own stats, and the helpdesk can see if there's a large amount of sync losses on the line.

You can also check the stats on your router to see what it says, if there's a lot of errors on it, for example.

How can mweb drop your sync light? my sync light is also dropping randomly but it cannot be mweb because that would be like saying a 3 gb prepaid could make your sync light drop.

Seems silly to believe that mweb is the reason the telkom line is dropping.

I have similar problems, but in my case the link light stays on, but I lose "internet" connectivity. A router reset sorts that out for an undefined time, but it does become a nuisance if you get to 90% of a large file and have to restart again :(

If your link light is up the whole time, then the issue could be behind the DSLAM, as the DSL sync is between your router and DSLAM. Things I can think off off-hand:

  • Issue on your router. It could be randomly disconnecting.
  • Intermittend issue between the DSLAM/Exchange and Telkom's backhaul.
  • Issue on the specific ESR you are terminating on.
  • Issue between the ESR and your ISP's RADIUS server.
  • Issue on your ISP's RADIUS server.

I would suggest a PPPoE connection from a PC to try and see if the PPPoE connection dies, and what error is returned when it does. Also to see how frequently it happens.

Thanks for the advise, I fortunately have an old marconi to start testing with, then the PPPoE next.

You could try doing hard-reset of the router. Just save your settings first.
