Mweb and SSL

My Mweb account has been disconnected because of abuse. I assume they mailed my Mweb account, which I never check, and which itself has now been disconnected, so I don't know yet what the abuse was (I've mailed them to find out). I imagine, though, that the issue is that I was downloading pretty heavily from a newsgroup server over SSL. It didn't even occur to me, but after some research I've realized that that obviously prevents Mweb from shaping me.

Once I get this issue resolved with them, I think I have two options: either upgrade my Mweb account to unshaped (which is four times the price) or stop using SSL for my downloads. I'm trying to figure out:

  1. Is it likely that I have identified the reason for this abuse complaint correctly?
  2. How concerned should I be about losing the SSL encryption for these downloads, given their contents?

Can anyone advise me?

I had the same problem a month ago with mweb, the funny thing is they could not specify what constitutes abuse. Even after speaking to Andre Joubert I could not get a indication of what constitute abuse exacly.

Long story short.

Move to openweb Gold on the VB backbone and you will never look back. With ym openweb gold I did 600GB this month so far and no warnings or issues at all.

Works great with astraweb and newsdeamon.

Hi

I have had the same while doing about 400 gig's a month. I did not use SSL, just normal connections to Europe.

My problem is that i have a 10mb line from telkom and a 4mb uncapped from Mweb and for some reason mweb cant seem to throttle the account correctly (d/l @ 600kbps). their beef with me was that i was d/l close to the speed limit for extended periods of time.

I solved the problem by apologizing and saying i would not do it again and set my d/l speed limit on Alt.binz to 400 kbs. (did almost 500 gig's last month.

Just confirming: you're using a regular uncapped Gold account? Not unshaped uncapped Gold? And you're downloading over SSL? If so, I'd be tempted to try Openweb. If that doesn't work, I think I'll have to pony up for an unshaped account. Mweb and Openweb seem to be the same price there: both R2k. Weirdly, Openweb Platinum uncapped unshaped is also R2k.

You were bypassing their shaping and that is the reason for getting it suspended.

Don't know if their policy changed but about 2 years ago when my account was suspended, they didn't allow me to use their service again so you can try and apologise (Contact MWEBGuy on the forum).

Most users from what i have read use the SSL connections but schedule the downloads at say from 11pm to 6am daily as apposed to 24/7 :D.

In terms of trying another provider, you have 3 options. Afrihost, OpenWeb or trying to cough up more with MWEB :p. (No particular order did i mention these guys).

Hi jack1986

The abuse warnings does go to the mweb specified email address. You mentioned you have mailed our abuse department, they will answer your questions and explain steps going forward.

Just received a reply from the abuse team. I explained to them that I did not realise I was violating the terms (and I really didn't -- I was using SSL so that people couldn't see what I was downloading; not so that Mweb couldn't throttle me), and they seem okay with it. They agreed that I should upgrade to the unshaped product, and said I could send them a mail once I had and they would unblock my account.

Don't wanna. :)

Am undecided at this point, but I'm not trying to deliberately circumvent anyone's shaping policies. Unfortunately I just can't get what I want -- SSL downloads all the time -- without inadvertently doing that. Tempted to go with Openweb Gold, based on GoofySmurf's advice above, but I'm sure I would then be breaking their terms of service and that's not what I want to do.

Thanks for the advice guys.
