Hi all

Okay so I've got some torrents on download (freeware stuff :D) but for some reason during the day they download between 0.1kbps-20kbps but during the night they shoot up to between 100kbps-200kbps. I have a 2mbps ADSL line and my ISP is MWeb.

Is MWeb capping my download speed during the day or is this normal? A few weeks back I never had this problem so I have no clue as to why this is happening now.

Any help appreciated

Its called shaping and yes its normal. ISPs don't want torrents clogging up their network during the day.

Crap!!! Thanks for the reply. Is there any way I can boost the speed?

Depends how you want to boost it

1) Change ISP's and sign up for a business account
2) VPN (violates ToS though)
3) Use a seedbox

Hi HoboSam

Torrents are given the lowest priority on our network, so speeds are not guaranteed

@HoboSam Unfortunately I moved away from MWeb for this reason, also if you reach your "soft cap" they will throttle your entire line down to 196 - 256kb (Depending on which account you are on)

I would recommend moving to Afrihost - Yes they also shape, but they will never shape your entire Line only Non-Real time protocols such as torrents. Browsing, emails, Streaming will never ever be shaped.

use the following link if you would like to sign up for an Uncapped account from Afrihost - You will get 50% off your first month.

I promise you will never look back.

You would have to pay through the nose for any Afrihost Business account - they haven't upgraded the speeds despite Telkom doing so. Even then, their claims of not shaping are dubious (see the thread for that). Maybe try Telkom, which is cheap and shaping is not very pronounced.

Afrihost business isn't that expensive - it's about the same price as Mweb Premium. I've been on 6Mbit AH business for about a year and it's been great. P2P downloads are completely unshaped 24/7. Things have taken a slight knock recently with their Cape Town IPC issues and understaffed call centre, but it's still the best value for money in the country imo.

Their line speeds were also upgraded. It's their data which hasn't been upgraded to match the new line speeds because that's an IPC issue.

Basically, Telkom would have had to drastically reduce their IPC pricing together with the line upgrades, which they have not done.

It's like Defy halving the price of their stoves but Eskom only reducing the cost of electricity by 5%. You can't blame Defy.

+1 moved from Openweb uncapped account to Afrihost capped account because the shaping was soon bad even with downloading nothing. Now I can stream almost any time of the day.

Also their client zone, network app and android app are worth a lot to me
