Anybody else having problems sending mail through MWEB?

I had to redirect all my mail traffic through Afrihost this morning.

telnet *.*.*.* 25

Yup client had same problem. I also can't RDP into their servers, so seems like they're blocking ports or something.

I have had at least one client with this issue concerning their MWeb connection today.

Hi solsagan

Please be aware that we made an important change to the way we handle email traffic on our network.

http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/EmailNetworkChange.aspx

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further assistance.

Kind regards
MWEB Guy

looks like mweb is going from bad to worse. blocking, shaping, throttling, etc.
i think some folks will add raping in the equation soon.

This really sucks!

I am not using the "Mweb network" to send mail. I am trying to authenticate against my own mail server and using that server to send the mail.

What steps do I need to take for me to Free The Web and connect to the server that I want to without my SMTP authentication request being intercepted?

Also, when was this http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/EmailNetworkChange.aspx notification/changes made? Was anybody informed?

try port 587 for smtp

From Hetzner's web sit:

Type: Mweb Subscribers: Sending Mail
Start Date: 2011-06-08 10:31:04
Resolved Date: TBA
Point of impact: Mweb Subscribers
Symptoms experienced: Customers experiencing difficulty sending email who are using Mweb as their service provider should take note that due to recent changes at Mweb, you are now required to use port 587 and authentication for mail submission.
Cause of problem: SMTP authentication required
Estimated time of repair: TBA
Additional information: Mweb is restricting port 25 traffic. Customers hosting email with Hetzner will need to change their email program to use port 587 and authentication for SMTP. Visit http://hetzner.co.za/mail for screenshots to assist in making this change.

Hi solsagan,

If you are using your own smtp, please try port 587.

We have communicated this to our members via email and the MWEB Help centre. http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/EmailNetworkChange.aspx

Email Network Change

As a preventative measure to combat outbound spam and virus-generated email traffic, MWEB will no longer support the direct sending of mail on Port 25. All port 25 traffic will be silently redirected to our own relay servers so that we can effectively manage any malicious traffic, thereby protecting our network from blacklisting. Should you wish to send mail through an external relay server in future you will have to use the mail submission port (587), which should be supported on all standards compliant relay servers. If your relay server does not support this please mail the details to [email protected] and we will investigate an alternative solution for you.

Kind regards,

MWEB guy

Well it's this or you can complain when your IP blocks are being blacklisted with SBL lists for spam. Webafrica implemented this stealth redirect some time ago too if I remember

Agreed, don't want that.

Correct me if I am wrong, but using a mail server where you require a username and password to send mail, "shields" the sender's ip block from being blacklisted and if unsolicited or bulk email is sent from such a server, the server's ip will get blacklisted.

And the unfortunate schmucks without a clean server IP get shafted. This change only affects users on the "home" adsl accounts which would mean primarily people without a server of their own. Business accounts are not affected by this redirect

hmm, i didnt even receive such a mail. thx mweb :'(

Vaalpens the communication was actually sent out quite some time ago and the information has been available on our help site since then. We have taken a very gradual approach to phasing in the redirection across the IP blocks so that we can control and monitor the impact, on both the client base and our mail platform. The process is now nearing completion though.

The intention is not censor, or force anyone to use our servers and you are more than welcome to utilize an off net smtp server if it supports alternative ports, which is really a very common configuration these days.

As someone mentioned earlier this is a necessary measure to prevent the blacklisting of IP ranges, both due to intentional spam sending from ADSL accounts and bot infected hosts transmitting on port 25.

I'm open to correction here but if I recall correctly this is probably the 3rd, or 4th discussion thread regarding this issue in the last few months.

Kind Regards
Will

This is why I use ZohoMail.

Just a note for anyone else coming across this thread:

How to open port 578 on Postfix server: (This was done on Ubuntu 10.04 server)

Code:
sudo nano /etc/postfix/master.cf
find the line
Code:
smtp inet n - - - - smtpd
and add the line afterwards
Code:
587 inet	n	-	-	-	-	smtpd
restart the postfix server
Code:
sudo service postfix restart
Test your connection from external to your server
Code:
telnet yourserverip 587

Now you can just change the port for the smtp server on the client side email program to 587

or you can split all outgoing traffic on port 25 on your router to go through some IS ISP
