Hi - ADSL at work is with MWEB. 6MB uncapped account which has a 150gb threshold at which point they start shaping the account, as you can see:

I phoned tech support and I still don't quite understand how the threshold works. I would have expected it to reset at the start of each month - so if by the 28th of March I'd used 150gb and the throttling had kicked in, on the 1st of April the data clock would reset and we'd be back to 0 and have another month in which to hit the 150gb threshold. This isn't how it works apparently. Can anyone briefly explain it? Mweb rep? Also that's some hectic shaping on a 6MB account.

it has a rolling window of 30 days. so it doesn't reset on the 1st.
Get a business account or at least premium.

Or better yet, get a 200GB capped account, get full speed all the time, for less money...
Uncapped in South Africa has become a lie.

So now that I've hit the threshold - how do I get it back to normal speed? I don't quite get how the 30 days thing works.

use as little as possible for the next few days.
30 Days back from today. So if your usage drops below 150Gb for the last 30 Days it will unthrottle
Always 30 Days back every day.

Hi saor, our throttling does not reset where the usage reverts to zero. It instead works on a 30 day rolling window. Meaning, if you are throttled today, then you need to look at the usage for the 30 days leading up to today and it gets recalculated everyday.

Please PM me your MWEB account details, so that I can look into this for you.

saor, this is what drove me to have a telephonic screaming match with MWeb support a few months back. This was when they were not openly admitting that they throttled ALL accounts.
I tore my hair out at the fact that it had a 30 day rolling reset period. I still don't get how their maths/calculations work... It's an enigma.
My best solution is to get more data cap, or move from a 6 meg to a 10 meg.

I was on a 1 meg business uncapped account, and after much stressing, I got a techie to finally admit that my 1 meg Business UNCAPPED PREMIUM account, actually only allowed me 100gig data transfer per month.
As I averaged 100 to 150 gig, I asked would a 2 meg account cover it, and he said yes.
I then asked is that was so FSKING hard to tell their clients and he merely shrugged.

*sigh*

Anyhoo... So now I am on a MWeb 2 meg Business Premium Uncapped account, which is actually a 2 meg 200gig capped account. This logic is typical south Africa ISP, but what can one do? Just grin and bare it I guess.
Overall, MWeb service is tops and my speeds are perfect for everything other than P2P, which I can only pull 12pm-8am.

R369 per month for 200gig data and a 2 meg line that averages 150-180 kB on downloads.
A call center that is awesome and that has helped me many times by kicking Telskum in the ass, when it was their issue.
Sorry, but I can't see that being beat.

Or you know, get the right account for your needs.

Instead of your usage being calculated on a 30day period that lines with the calendar. All your usage over the last 30days gets counted.

So today is the 7th April. That means your usage will get calculated from the 7th March. Then when tomorrow is the 8th April, your usage will be calculated from 8th March.

This 30 rolling data to me is a scam. I'm on a 4mb uncapped were they say I can have 110G. For the last 3 months usage April 60G,May 105G, June 60G. And I've been throttled numerous time in that period. Because The rolling figure goes over 110G. I was told by the operator I must try not to use More than 3.6G per day. Essentially they are saying you have a cap. With the rolling total your never able to 'get back in the unthrotteled zone' because the data just keeps rolling on and it get worse. And for those who think you can upgrade to increase your threshold news flash that when you upgrade they don't push you data used back to zero data but continue adding on what you already used so is your go over you mite sit in the same situation 3 months from now. My advise is to go to a Service provider without rolling tallies. This kind of system in my view is a scam in order for Mweb to max Benefits without actually providing the service you acctually paying for.

If 110GBs isn't enough for you, then upgrade to Premium where you get 400GBs.

But yes, it doesn't look like you should be throttled going by your numbers.

This is the explanation I got form mweb

Thank you for taking the time to bring this matter to our attention.
I can see how this would concern you and I would like to assist in getting it resolved.
The monthly usage you refer to does not determine if you will be throttled or not.
Instead it is your 30 day rolling window which determines if you will be throttled or not.
Your usage at the moment for a the last 30 days is 122.98 GB's which is more than the 110 GB threshold on the account.
Once the usage for the previous 30 days falls below 110 GB's, the account will be unthrottled.

Bearing in mind that this months usage only stands at 65G. and that that 110G they talk about goes up each day you online its like fighting a uphill battle. trying to stay under 110G even with moderate use.

I have cancelled with mweb and chosen a capped product with another ISP. The moral is don't go for uncapped at Mweb its not worth the trouble of being throttled all the time. Even Telkom with all their BS don't castrate you line like Mweb does.

^^^ I still don't really get it tbh. It's a convoluted way of doing something and just leaves people confused. Also gonna move from mweb in the coming months when our offices move.

I cant wait to move but have to wait for 30 days nice even though I cancelled on the 9 May their BS policy is that you have to give a calendar months notice. so can only quite 01 Aug -

The rolling window for uncapped when throttled is very difficult to get out of .
EG 1 May -30 May I use my full 110G ( line gets throtteled)- so ive used 110G in my 30 rolling days. that counter does not reset it keeps going up as long as you are using the internet. on the 1 June they will subtract what you used on 01 May and minus it from 110G. (01 May used 2G) so my new total on the 2 June is now 108G on 30 rolling days (line is unthrotteled). but if you used 3 G on the 01 June then you rolling total would be 111G ( line throttled again) and so it repeats on a daily basis with a fight to use as little as possible to get unthrotteled.

So they say but its uncapped and you can use as much as you like - but they don't tell you that if you keep using more date you will be thotteled even longer perhaps indefinitely. so the line speed your paying you not actually getting the value from it.

Therefore moving to premium will eventually give you the same result when you have reached you 400G cap you will be fighting to get Back under it again.

Francky Mweb thinks its consumers are stupid i chosen to take my business elsewhere.

It's very easy to get out of. You either change/relax your usage, fire up free GB accounts from other ISPs, or pay for more bandwidth. Be it an upgraded account, or capped account from another ISP, etc.

Uncapped does not mean eat as much as you can, it means that you will never be capped.

If people on 4Mbps Premium are getting throttled, then they can refer to the options above. The point is you pay for what you get, no longer are ISPs charities, it's unsustainable.

i agree that ISPs are not charities. But i expect not not get screwed. 30 rolling days is not a fair approach. Personally i like to monitor my usage. with 30 day rolling i cant. because soon as you used the allotted amount fully its a uphill battle to stay under it and trust me its a loosing battle even if like me you monitor it closely and switch it off for a few day to Mb just keeping catching up with you.

Personally i agree with the AUP its how the IPS like MWeb apply it that i have the Issue with. EG afrihost has no threshold uncapped accounts they throttle by what kind of data you use eg P2P gets throttled while gaming and surfing does not get throttled EVER. Telkom on the other hand they give you a bar graph that goes up so you don't actually know how much you used before getting throttled

30 rolling days is not a fair approach.

Much fairer than a soft cap. Once soft capped, you'd be throttled till month end. With a throttled non soft capped account, you have the ability to return to full speed within one day.
