I have logged a call with MWEB for a customer of mine, and I am wanting to know if others are experiencing this at the moment or have experienced it recently.

Since about 10am this morning 27/06/2012 MWEB have been returning NDR's (Non delivery reports) for emails sent by our mail server with the response being MWEB-RATE-LIMIT-DENY.
Apparently we have exceeded and hourly limit of 400 emails per hour (that's a fair limit I think).
Problem is that we keep getting the NDR as if the limit is not being reset.

Yes it could be a Virus as the mail server shows only about 40 emails sent since 9AM today, although some were marketing emails to many recipients, however those emails were sent about 10AM and they haven't sent to many recipients since. however the antivirus is up to date and the management console does not show any issues on the users' pc's at the moment.

Unfortunately the customer uses a MWEB MIG as a firewall/proxy and I have no view into that either to trace what is happening.

My gut feel is that this rate limit is not being reset every hour - any advice as I am in the dark waiting for MWEB to respond which by experience can be a very drawn out process requiring many phone calls.....and I have a very irate customer.

Hi Electron1

Please PM me with the customer's details in order for me to look further into this from our side.

I have PM'd the details - Thanks MWEB Guy
The ADSL account is on MWEB home, although they have a MWEB MIG on site.

Ah that explains a bit,you using the MIG to relay the mail?

No not using the MIG for mail at all, using Exchange.

MWEB did get back to me, I am impressed with their response today, better than previous experience.
Turns out that the marketing person sent out some emails to many recipients, which triggered this limit.
It seems to have been triggered at least twice today, which was the concern, however it appears this was due to a specific user and I am addressing that with the user concerned.
Apparently if you continually trigger the limit, MWEB will block you - understandably so.

I have advised my customer to spread out bulk emails to avoid a repetition of the issue.
MWEB also advised they use a bulk email service if they have to send out many emails, but for now we will see how they go spreading out their marketing a bit.

Makes sense,I would actually see if they REALLY need to send it from internal use a paid-for SMTP relaying service rather than the ISP one

Thanks PsyWulf I had not thought about a paid for smtp service as alternative to a bulk message service.

Do you have any that you recommend, and also any bulk mail app that is easy to use?

Turns out that the marketing guy has been sending out two monthly emails to 1000 recipients each, yet this is the first time we triggered the limit, even though theoretically the limit of 400 users per hour has always been in place. I have to say that I have had really great service from MWEB on this, even getting a follow up call this morning. Keep it up, MWEB!

Previously the SMTP would just deny outgoing mail till the outgoing mail is back within limits, first time I see a NDR,which may or may not be after they upgraded their outgoing mail cluster

I use the Mweb Mailmarshal SPE for incoming and outgoing mail relay, handles the antispam and antivirus too. Also got a failover service from Postini(Googleapps)

I don't do Mass Mailers so I dunno about any useful bulk mail providers :)
