Company responsible for South Africa's most iconic email addresses is having big problems

Mweb, one of South Africa’s largest independent Internet service providers, began an email system upgrade last week that has caused big problems for customers.

The Webafrica-owned ISP controls many of the most iconic legacy email domains, including icon.co.za and mweb.co.za itself, thanks to an aggressive acquisition spree in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

My mother's email stopped working. After looking around a bit I noticed the POP3/SMTP settings were still using the old iafrica setting which they must have switched off or changed recently. Setting it to use mweb seems to have fixed it for now. I feel for people who have to rely on mweb support

These things are not the same.

Legacy ballies & their mweb emails - the only thing helping mweb retain customers.
I am one of those; incredibly frustrating as emails stopped coming to a legacy address for my business in mid December; sorted after much angst now it has happened again; caller No. 46 in the queue then get cut off at say 12 (similar three times after maybe 6 hours total), multiple emails and chat efforts are just ignored. 🤬

I don' think "retain" will be applicable going forward.

After a 4 hour wait now; all I can say is that I am surprised mweb have any customers at all. I was making a tiny bit of headway with an "agent" when I was cut off. He was absolutely clueless.

We’ve all known this for years…yet somehow they still manage to retain customers.

Ugh,I have one client that's been losing their Lawyer's mails to the black hole that is Mweb mail, once it goes through Antispam it disappears as "Delivered"

“I had a look for my parents, and it seems many incoming emails reach Mweb’s Antispam Cloud and despite showing as ‘not-spam’ and ‘delivered’, they never arrive on Mweb’s online email or the Outlook client.”

Selecting “Retry delivery from queue” or “Release from quarantine” in Antispam Cloud does nothing, since the email is not in the queue or quarantined in the cloud.

They tried manually adding emails to the allowlist, but this also did nothing.

Hey that's me. So after two days of missing emails, on Wednesday the 28th MWEB emailed to say that the email upgrade would take place in the next few days.

On Friday the 30th, MWEB upgraded the mailbox but Outlook received no emails - just stayed syncing for hours with no visible changes happening.

Removed the IMAP account and added it again, which their second email suggested. I find this quite funny because their first email said IMAP users won't notice any changes.

Now everything works, so far every email has arrived since then.

Half of the emails on the days leading up to the upgrade have been lost to the void unfortunately, luckily you can see subjects and senders in the antispamcloud so you can contact the senders to resend the emails.

My emails stopped working since 1 February 2026. I am not able to send or receive with all of my emails except for one that works intermittently. I have tried calling them multiple times on various days, waiting for more than 2 hours on call before it gets cut off. I have emailed [email protected] and [email protected] to transfer my domain to Absolute Hosting, but I have not received any response since Monday. I also sent an email to [email protected] to close/cancel my account attaching copy of my ID and letter with my business letterhead with cancellation request. I have been customer with MWEB since 1999, and even though my website is hosted with Absolute Hosting, my emails were running smoothly for almost 26 years with them. But I have to close my account now because there is no service. I have also sent complaint to [email protected] if MWEB does not transfer my domain as requested. I have been almost two weeks without emails working properly.
