MWeb Johannesburg DC Down?

How does a DC have such poor redundancy? I can swap to an entirely different PC at home with a different internet connection and not even notice as I have data redundancy across the lot, how do I have better redundancy that a DC? I have power, internet and hardware redundancy and I don't even do anything mission critical? Did someone go rogue?

Multiple systems going down at the same time can cause "redundant" setups to completely fail.

It sucks but does happen and there isn't a whole hell of a lot anyone can do about it.

Just spoke to support, and they say the restore should be up until the Friday crash - we can only hope, else going to be a long weekend.

This is somewhat good news. Since the failure was on Friday before 8h, not a lot of data should be generated before business hours...

Dear MWEB Business customer,

The VM platform is currently being re-provisioned to re-instate services to you our valued customers.

The re-provisioning is being executed in batches in an attempt to speed up the restoration process.

Notification of completed batches will be communicated to affected customer via email.

On receiving the notification customers are required to please log into MYACCOUNT in order to obtain your new Virtual server login credentials and IP address. Customers will then be required to restore content / applications from backup.

The re-provisioning of the environment is anticipated to be completed within 24 hours.

We once again apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Thank you.

So looks like all data is lost?!?!? "Customers will then be required to restore content/applications from backup"

Also looks like you get new IP WTF

I have already stared to restore my offline backups to an Ignite server...

If the above is true Mweb Bus. can take their newly provisioned VM back thanks

I know they are now the same company but only place I know of at the moment that I can fire up a VM and pay with CC in a few mins

Any alternatives for local instant VM's requiring no paper work? Time to diversify

Anyone know if they will be able to restore data yet? Even with offline backups our loss is tremendous.

Can confirm received mail saying my VM is ready, logged in using new password and IP and server is clean install...

This is not good guys...

Feedback from Mweb Business is that this wasn't a DC outage, but downtime on its VM platform.

"At this stage we are re-provisioning the VM’s in batches. Customers will be issued with new Virtual server login credentials and IP addresses. The re-provisioning of the environment should be completed within 24 hours."

Who didn't have a backup? -

I assume they are charging separately for backups?

Anyone know what caused it? This sounds severe enough to be intentional.

The following went down all at once on Friday Morning, so it was almost the entire data center that went offline
(as I use all of the below)

- VPS
- VoIP (Mweb Talk)
- Static IP DSL
- My Account Portal

Static IP DSL came back on at about 11:00am, and VoIP was restored at 3:00pm, VM well all data gone, luckily I was still testing the service out, cancelled it and moving on.

Does anyone have a recent update on this situation. An article was posted 2 hours ago on this website and mentioned the following: "the company has said that its data centre facilities are up and running, and have full redundancy in place." If they do have full redundancy in place then surely there shouldn't be any data loss?

They will claim they had connectivity redundancy in place, but not infrastructure related redundancy.

So the people with services in that DC - is everything working again?

I'm always very glad that I don't work in a DC when **** hits the fan - cannot be fun.

Our virtual machine (with different IP) is back online but there is no sign of any of our applications or data. Does anybody know if data will be restored? I have tried to call MWEB this morning but phones just go dead.

Unfortunately not. All data have been lost and attempts at data recovery failed (according to their support late yesterday afternoon). They said they will inform us if they were able to recover anything but I would recommend you assume the worst.
