We still seem to have customers that are having problems with their lines dropping regularly, variable speeds etc. Based on what we can see on various online forums, most ISP’s seem to be battling with the same issues. We’re happy that the changes we made over the weekend have given us plenty of capacity on our IPC nodes and international bandwidth. (We are aware of some latency issues for users trying to access gaming servers hosted on the SAIX network and we’re busy trying to find a solution for that.)

Telkom are not saying anything – no surprises there! They did not report on a serious outage in Gauteng on a number of exchanges over the weekend, but have subsequently confirmed to us verbally that there was a problem. We’re seeing something similar in Cape Town for customers in the Southern Suburbs but as yet, no official confirmation from Telkom either. We’ll keep investigating until we get them to resolve this.

You can add Northern Suburbs to that, I've been having regular drops for probably the past month now (2-3 times that I know of at least per day) and also by and large poor speeds (though priority traffic seems to do okay).

Thanks for the update and clarification.

There are so many links between an ADSL user and the destination site, that if any one of them is not working, it will seem like 'the whole internet' is failing for that person...

I always ask users to post a tracert, since that almost always gives an indication of where the problem is (ADSL-DSLAM, ESR-IPC, SAIX-other ISP gateway, SEACOM, etc).

Well here is my take on the situation.

I have a 4mb line which 2 weeks ago would at least had pushed 3.2m/s on Speedtest.net....last night I got 0.87 and 1.2m/s....

This was on Mweb and Axxess. My Axxess Lite account is at least 50% better than my Uncapped Mweb account doing a test like this.

So:
a) Telkom is messing around somewhere as my line is not near its speeds (I have done a port reset as well and same issues!)
b) Mweb's upgrades have done zip for me
c) Axxess is better than MWeb, but still those speeds are not acceptable.

I am paying for 4m/s but receiving a 1m/s service?!

Correction, you are paying for a 1mbit line from Telkom, if you get more you should consider yourself lucky.

Huh? where am I paying for 1mb/s? I said I pay for 4n/s but that my speeds are only 0.8-1.4m/s on Speedtest.net...

I do not understand your comment at all mate

That is what Telkom will tell you if you report your line speed as a problem. I've just gone through 8 months of missery trying to get them to sort things out, which ended in me starting to investigate wireless last mile options. They won't do anything if you get at least 640 kbps download speed, read the fine print.

Well You really paying for a 1mbit line.Read the Fine print. Its a "best effort service".They just advertising it as 4mb or 10mb as that how much it can reach. You paying for a 1mb service and its out of (cough)Telkoms Genoristy(cough) That you would be geting more than you are paying for.1mbit is the gurreented amount ,anything higher is just luck that you can sync higher.

* Fast DSL up to 384kbps
* Faster DSL up to 512kbps
* Fastest DSL up to 4096/10016kbps

Long as you're hitting ~1mbps Telkom washes their hands of you ;)

My connection was cruising over the weekend.

Come monday, my torrents are crawling at 1Kbps and my WoW ping was around 300, now it shot up to 1000.

Whats going on?

Pathetic speed here in Durban, Kloof. I can see it stop start stop start whilst watching a Youtube clip. I see all my Skype and Gmail constacts in out in out and its not them being dc. Torrent speeds are all over the place but mainly on the floor...
