Hi Everyone

The following mailer is going out to our customers this afternoon as a general update on the network upgrade progress:

Dear MWEB Customer

It's been a frustrating couple of weeks with the ongoing upgrades to our network. We've had significant challenges with Telkom and how they route traffic between our two major IPC nodes, but it looks like the worst of that is finally behind us!

The Telkom issues have unfortunately delayed the upgrade of some of our international capacity, as we had to divert resources to sort out the national routing issues. The first planned increase will now take place this weekend between midnight on Saturday and 06h00 on Sunday morning. During this time normal browsing and e-mail will operate as per normal, but bandwidth-heavy applications such as Peer-2-Peer will not be available.

The good news, however, is that we have decided to bring the next international network upgrade forward by a good couple of months, to be completed in the latter half of October.

By then we'll have increased the size of our network by just over 50% and considering that less than 30% of our base was previously using the SAIX network, that should give you a fair idea of how much additional capacity you'll have at your disposal.

We do apologise again that this has all taken slightly longer than anticipated but at the same time we think youÂąre really going to enjoy the improvements we're making.

If you require any further information please don't hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards
Derek Hershaw

Edit: all this only happening after over 2 weeks of absolutely shocking network speed.... When is some1 going to dethrone these guys, Im getting gatvol!

You may be amused by this e-mail from 11 years ago, that I stumbled on over the weekend:

Subject: e-mail and Browsing Problems

> Dear Internet Africa Subscriber
>
> During the course of the last few days you will have experienced problems with both your e-mail and with download speeds when browsing on the Internet. We are currently in the process of carrying out significant upgrades to both our mail environment and our International bandwidth. Unfortunately we experienced certain technical problems during this process which undermined our efforts to make this a completely seamless process for our subscribers. Please accept our sincere apologies for this and for the inconvenience that it will have caused you during this process.
>
> At the time of writing, the cut-over to a new 34Meg International link has been completed, is in the process of being configured and you will shortly experience significant improvements in download speeds. Our mail environment is stable once again as we begin preparations for the final phase of this particular upgrade. Once this has been completed (in about 4 to 6 weeks from now) we are confident that you will be able to enjoy the benefits of a more stable and efficient e-mail application.
>
> Obviously with problems of this nature our Technical Support Call Centre has been kept very busy. Again, we apologise for the deterioration of service levels in this regard, but these are now returning to the levels that you were previously accustomed to.
>
> Thank you for your patience during this period. If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us on 0860 030 002, or by replying to this e-mail.

erm no. What they were trying to get at is that they had supplemented their bandwidth with 30% of saix bandwidth befre. we are experiencing slow speeds atm because they no longer have that bandwidth any more. They will be adding 50% in future. So technically, your speeds should go to 80kB/s =)

Is my math really that poor? They had 30% (which they now lost) and are replacing it with 50%, hence a 20% increase?

Edit: if it is double the speed then YAY! :D

they dont have the 30% any more.

Okay. Lets see. acurrate calcs.

100% = Mweb + Saix = 3 weeks ago
70% = Mweb = Today = 40kB/s
120% = Mweb = Sunday = 40/70*120 = 68kB/s.

120% = Mweb = Sunday = 40/70*120 = 68kB/s.

Correction, I had 40KB/s when things were good, atm I have 10KB/s :P

100% = Mweb + Saix = 40KB/s
70% = Mweb = Today = 10kB/s
120% = Mweb = Sunday = 40/100*120 = 48kB/s w00t! ^.~

But a 50% increase on what? You can't just add 50 to 70.

If it is a 50 % increase over the capacity of 3 weeks ago, that could be:

100% = Mweb + Saix = 3 weeks ago
70% = Mweb = Today = 40kB/s
150% = Mweb = Sunday = 1.5*100 = 86kB/s.

or if it a 50% increase over current capacity, it could be

100% = Mweb + Saix = 3 weeks ago
70% = Mweb = Today = 40kB/s
105% = Mweb = Sunday = 1.5*100 = 60kB/s.

I hope it is the first one.

I doubt working with a random download speed and round percentages to predict speeds will be very accurate. It also depends on how much of this bandwidth makes it into the P2P pool of course, so the speed for P2P could triple if http etc is already satisfied.

That will never happen, Ive been with MWeb from the start and have never felt "totally satisfied" with the service even when things were (according to them) "going great"... That would be like ecstasy... And everyone knows, ecstasy comes at a price! ;)

Haha ye I know, but actually if you were on the SAIX network things were pretty much perfect. It was basically a normal capped account for uncapped. If P2P speeds are back to "normal" the account will still be fine for me, I can already download as much as I need, the speeds are just frustrating.

is this why my download speed on torrents went from 290kb/s to 30kb/s on Monday?
