So I have decided to go the way of usenet.
I am busy setting up SABnzbd, however

Host: news.mweb.co.za
Port: 119
Connections: 3

This doesn't seem to work. Unless Mweb has changed the news domain.

pls help

Edit:
This is the response I get:: Could not determine connection result ()

Dear MWEBBER,

Over the last few years, MWEB has partnered with Giganews to deliver the latest content on our Usenet service hosted on news.mweb.co.za. However, due to the extremely low uptake on the service, we have made the decision to terminate this service as of 23 October 2014.

Don't despair, if you wish to continue using this service, Giganews is offering all MWEB subscribers an exclusive lifetime discount on their Premium Usenet service.

MOrning, we no longer offer the news server service.

The MWEB news servers where decommissioned a while ago.

+1. Just another reason to ditch em

Your best bet would be to go with a paid service (astraweb, newsdemon, nextgen news). You can try xsuse for free, but it's not too great.
If you're a crystal Web customer, you get access to both is news server and a premium news server (NGN).

With the price of these services, one may as well get Netflix

Free with Crystal Web, as mentioned...;)

And that's 2 news servers: one standard and one premium...

unfortunately i'm not paying for the internet, so I have no say in what ISP to go with

Is this still the same server people complain about all the time?

NextGenNews?

We've not encountered complaints all of the time whatsoever. Quite the contrary - it's one of the most stable upstream services we procure...

A couple of guys in this thread would beg to differ:

Lots of incompletes on news servers today

Happened over the span of a few days. Prior to that, I think I encountered 1 issue over the past year, which was also sorted in a few days.

Fortunately IS news server was available and sufficient (and runs @ full speed, might I add).

Had it been the case where the ISP only had one news server and that was buggered(i.e. no redundancy / total loss of service), I'd be thoroughly cheesed off.
